I was wondering if sheesha/hookah smoking is haram in Islam or not? because recent studies shows us that sheesha contains products which are as harmfull as cigarretes.I have seen the majority scholars saying tat it is haram based on a verse of the Quran which says not to kill or harm ourselves.However we have lot of things which can have long term harmfull effects on us such as drinking too much coke or other bevarages. So i wondering if there are any verses from the Quran or hadith which sheds some light on this issue?

From the context, it should be clear that this is not related to health but rather our responsibilities as Muslims. By not living up to these responsibilities we potentially harm ourselves more than we may realize. Thus, there is no ground to forbid smoking based on this verse.

Mind, body and spirit are intertwined and effect each other in one form or another. From the religious perspective the moral issue is of utmost importance to this formula, which we employ to reach out to the Almighty. Sheesha cafes in the metropolitan city have been given the green light to continue doing business as the Sindh government has directed the Karachi police to refrain from taking action against them. Sources have disclosed that top police officials have been directed not to crack down on Sheesha cafes.

Sources further told The Express Tribune that Sheesha cafes, predominantly located in posh neighbourhoods of the metropolis, have been subject to periodic crackdowns in recent years. However, these cafes have managed to survive and even thrive, with the Karachi police reportedly resorting to extorting weekly and monthly payments from them instead of shutting them down entirely.

In response to this, the Sindh government recently issued instructions to cease the crackdown on Sheesha cafes. As a preventive measure, police will now be stationed outside these cafes to deter youths from using drugs disguised as sheesha consumption. If the smoker is found using drugs at any cafe, the owner will be arrested.

Sources have confirmed that, in compliance with the Sindh government's directives, police have been deployed outside Sheesha cafes in the South and East Zones to monitor any unlawful activities. However, it has been clarified that if Sheesha consumption is the only activity within these cafes, no action will be taken against them, and the owners will not be harassed by police.

We knew from the start of the trip we wanted to try a sheesha bar, where Egyptians gather to smoke flavoured tobacco out of water pipes known as sheeshas. This was recommended to us by some of our Arabic friends back home.

Our first experience was delightful. We have thus far tried apple, grape, mint, strawberry and "sunshine". My favourite so far has been the apple, one of the first flavours we were offered. The taste went down well with some dark, grainy, Turkish coffee and hibiscus tea.

We joined in with the other patrons of the bar relaxing, smoking and watching some Arabic music videos. These are quite interesting, as they seem to be mimicking our western style but with their own unique twist. I shall save Arabic music for another entry after a more thorough diagnosis has been made. After this experience I knew I had to get a sheesha of my own, however.

By chance we spotted some in a mall smoke shop and decided to venture in. No sooner had we taken a look at some beautiful hookahs than a woman cornered us and said these magic words, a special deal, just for me!

This turned out to be genuine, however. The cigarette-smoking owner assured us everything was working fine and allowed us a test run. On top of that he still came through with a bargain - 90 Egyptian pounds, about $15 Canadian. The owner and his wife asked us to return if we experienced any problems with my sheesha (named Habibi - sweetheart) and we were implored to return in any case just to say hello, and look for more special prices.
