Anyone able to recommend a good solution for using my fax machine on
asterisk? Tried a few things. Haven't found the "answer" yet.

Chris,

Are you talking about an analog fax machine or using asterisk as the fax machine?

On anything other than a LAN, you will need to use t.38 to add fault
tolerance to your UDP traffic. The latest version of Asterisk (1.6) has the
most t.38 support of any version -- allowing for more than just
pass-through. Asterisk 1.4 will allow for t.38 pass-through with the
correct entries in sip.conf but you will need a your provider to support
t.38 (arrival telecom) and you will need a sip device that also supports
t.38 (Linksys spa2102).

This sounds like a good topic for a UTAUG meeting -- anybody interested in
having one of those again?

I need to have a physical fax machine connected to my asterisk server which is connected to a sip provider that does not support t.38 officially

yeah... i wondered where the group had gone ;-)
Can anyone recommend a good provider that supports t.38 and is not a
freaking fortune? I am currently with binfone for sip and have been
REALLY happy with them. They just dont support the t.38

Once I get that I am sure I will have questions on how to actually set
it all up.

The only solution that I trust is a TDM solution for fax. In my
installations I've always had a separate analog line for fax (which
doesn't even touch my asterisk server).

Likewise. Unless the end-user can tolerate between 10-25% full/partial
failure rate, TDM is definitely the way to go.

I let fax and modem run through asterisk at my former employer, but
that was all zaptel, no packets. PRIs coming in and cheap ebay channel
bank (carrier access) to analog lines. Zero problems.

I haven't used their t.38 service, but Eliott said they have it, and
ArrivalTel is a good price. I have run analog fax through their
service (without t.38) with good success (lower failure rate than I've
gotten on other services, don't know what percentage, but I don't
remember a failure off the top of my head - YMMV). I use IAXmodem to
receive faxes, but a physical fax machine connected to a linksys PAP2
to send them (I turned off echo cancellation in the PAP2 for best
results).
