DISCLAIMER: I didn't read EVERY email that has come through, so if this stuff has already been discussed, then sorry about that.
Lots of questions for brainstorming:
1) What's the budget like for the convention? Does all of the money usually come from admission fees? What were the cost & attendance/revenue last year?
2) Are there any sponsors lined up? Have board game companies been contacted to see if they'd like to advertise their company or their new games (big banners or whatever) or run demos or anything? Maybe there could even be non-gaming sponsors like Papa Johns and other businesses like that.
3) Maybe there can be spaces set up for vendors, charging per stall or something. There are quite a few board game resellers in Utah, and I bet at least a few of them would be willing to pay to get their name out there. Maybe some of them could run demos of games they're selling.
4) What about selling refreshments and drinks and such (at not too eye-gouging of prices)?
5) Charging for parking (depending on the venue)?
6) Could you get stuff donated for raffles or auctions?
7) How about running tournaments with entry fees and prizes and keeping a cut to help cover convention expenses? I bet you could get a LOT of people in for a Settlers of Catan tournament with a fairly hefty prize.
8) Are CCGs included in the gaming? I know a number of people who play Magic but have never heard of AGoS. I could probably get at least 4-5 people to go if there are dedicated tables for playing Magic.
9) Has anyone contacted community centers and places like that? With the economy the way it is, I would think that there would be *someplace* big enough that could use a nice cash infusion.
10) Run a nursery & charge per kid per hour?
I haven't attended AGoS yet, and a large part of the reason why is because of the confusing parking situations on campuses. Parking tickets are often expensive and not worth the risk to me, particularly if the available lots are already full. I, personally, would be willing to pay a small fee for parking ($2-3) if it guaranteed me a space. Sure, many of these suggestions are pretty money-grubbing and not ideal for the attendee, but if people aren't willing to pay more for admission, the money's gotta come from somewhere.
