Second, thanks to you Tom and everyone else who have shown interest in
the class (I think we've got 30 or so now). It should be a great
opportunity for all of us. In answer to your questions:
When will it start:
Thursday, September 9, 6:00pm
Where (I threw this one in):
At the Rain (http://www.mediarain.com/) offices in American Fork. 686
E 110 S #102, American Fork, UT 84003 (Map: http://bit.ly/byf3EO)
How often will we meet:
I'm thinking every week or every other week. We'll discuss it during
the first class.
Will cotton candy be provided:
Or cupcakes, whichever you prefer to bring. :) Seriously though, I
realize it's dinner-time-ish so if you guys want to bring some food
that shouldn't be a problem as long as you clean up after yourselves.
I've also been asked what type of preparation is needed for the class:
I'll be teaching using Flash Builder 4
(http://www.adobe.com/products/flashbuilder/) so you'll probably want
to download and install it before the first class. You can use it as
a trial for 60 days I think. If you attend BYU, work at BYU, or are
unemployed you can get a free copy here:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/free/index.html If you have Flex
Builder 3 you should be able to get by fine.
I want to reiterate that this is not a programming principles class.
You should be comfortable with object-oriented programming or be
prepared to learn the principles outside of class. On the other hand,
you won't need any prior knowledge of Flex. We'll try to keep the
class focused on Flex as much as possible.
I hope that's enough to get us started. I'll send out a reminder as
we get closer. Let me know if you have any more questions.
:) <-- One more for a personal record.
Aaron
I'm looking forward to this. I played with Flash CS3 a few years back, quickly realized that I wanted programmatic control of everything, and soon found myself writing all my Flash apps by creating 1-frame movie that instantiated my class, and then handing the stage to my app. After that I only left emacs to tell Flash to recompile. :-)
Getting back into it, Flex is really a breath of fresh air, by which I mean the kind of dry, musty, stale air that us "it's all just text" geeks love so much. :-)
No, I do not have the period key bound to dot-space-colon-hyphen-parenthesis, why do you ask? :-)
(That's four and I'm not even breaking a sweat. Also, I favor the grammatically correct hyphenated form, which is 50% more satisfying.)
Looking forward to seeing you guys there!
David
