BEEHIVE CHEESE COMPANY’S PROMONTORY SMOKED WITH WALNUT SHELLS AND APPLES WINS BRONZE MEDAL AT THE WORLD CHEESE AWARDS

Las Palmas, Canary Islands SPAIN – (October 1, 2009) — Beehive Cheese Company of Uintah, Utah wins a Bronze Medal for Smoked Cheddar at the 21st Annual World Cheese Awards.  Results for the annual competition were announced on October 7th by the UK’s Guild of Fine Food.

Promontory Smoked with Walnut Shells and Apples is made with whole Jersey cow milk from the local Wadeland Dairy.  The cheese has a creamy texture with slight fruity notes.  The smoke for the cheese is from English walnut shells harvested from a local farm and sweet red apples.  "We are extremely excited that our cheese was recognized in world competition.  It is unbelievable to us how far we have come in such a short time and it was exciting to attend the awards gala in the Canary Islands.  The recognition fuels our passion to continue making high quality and delicious cheeses" said Tim Welsh, Founder of Beehive Cheese Company.

Over 150 judges from 24 countries, including Mexico, South Africa, Japan and Australia, sampled the 2,440 entries in a marathon tasting session. It was only the second time the awards have been held outside Britain in their 21-year history and it attracted cheeses from 34 different countries.

Guild of Fine Food national director Bob Farrand said: “This was the most international team of judges ever assembled, with representatives from four continents involved in choosing the World Champion. It’s the largest and most cosmopolitan cheese awards on the planet.”

A gala awards dinner took place after the judging at the Hotel Santa Catalina in Las Palmas where the judges were joined by a further 150 guests including the Canary Islands’ President and senior government ministers. The awards were featured on all local and mainland Spanish TV networks and attracted over 15,000 consumers to the two-day festival, all eager to taste the winning cheeses.

Hi Guys,
I am so happy for you all and very happy for us. We sold or should I
say that Darryl sold a whole wheel of the smoked on Saturday.
Emmi, I talked to Todd in Italy and he said that you helped him out at
the last convention. How was that?
