Bill that's awesome you donated some parts. If I'm in Arizona I'll have to go. I did hit an awesome little car museum in Pennsylvania that had several antique electrics, pretty neat.

Way to go Charles! One good lithium pic deserves another! It's a lot of work hooking up 600 little batteries! My battery boxes put the batteries low without drooping below the bodywork of the car.

Looking good David. I hope to go lithium some day. Any reasonable price lithiums out there?

Probably the cheapest you can do nowadays is getting a pack out of a wrecked Leaf or Chevy Volt. The downside is the automakers tend to use LiCo batteries, which are more prone to fire and have shorter cycle life, but do have good energy density. You should use the original car's monitoring or have a sophisticated monitoring system.

If you are a pure racer, for sheer power-to-weight for a good price, it is tough to be RC LiPo batteries. They do not have good cycle life (OK for the RC crowd), and are easily damaged with their soft envelopes.

LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate batteries) are good hobbiest batteries. They are more resistant to fire, have great cycle life, and are pretty inexpensive. They are also what most hobbiests use (Charles being the latest and greatest local example, hopefully me soon), For power $/kW, Headway Power cells are cheap, but you have to string many small cells together. If you want range $/mile, the big block cells like CALBs that Jack Rickard sells or HiPowers (not really high power but are more for range) cells that Carl sells are inexpensive for new cells.

If you don't kill them, LiFePO4 cells are cheaper in the long run than lead acid!

Carl has some new batteries that sound like a good deal, here is his message:

I would like to call your attention to a LiFePO4 cell that we now handle.  These New Energy cells are in stock here in Salt Lake.  I really like the 20 AH cell because it has a 4000 charge cycle life.  That’s about twice the normal prismatic life.  It is also a 5C cell that is typically about 6% to 16% lighter than an equivalent prismatic cell.  They also usually takes up between 13% to 26% less space.  For a 144 volt 100 AH pack you would put together a 48 cells in series and 5 of these series strings in parallel. 48S5P.  With this arrangement if a cell ever goes weak or fails you lose 20% of the range and no loss of voltage.   The New Energy company also makes a 50 AH and 60 AH cell.  I have enclosed all these cells specifications,  As a loyal member of the Utah Electric Club I will extend special pricing to any other members.  All these cells carry a two year factory replacement warranty.

If a member wants to stick with a conventional prismatic cell we can offer some fabulous prices.  Prices that I doubt can be beat.  All with a two year warranty.  These are not Hipower cells.  Although I have a lot of 60 AH Hipower cells that I will offer to Utah EV Club members for $55 each.

We have also cultivated special relationships with several lithium pack battery chargers manufacturer’s.  Because of these relationships we can offer some great prices on a wide variety of chargers. ...

Keep smiling,  Carl
