Improving Internet Performance over Wireless Links
George Xylomenos
University of California, San Diego
Two important developments on the Internet are the increased popularity of
wireless links and the introduction of end-to-end Quality of Service
provisioning. Unfortunately, wireless links exhibit error rates that
considerably degrade the performance of both TCP and real time UDP
applications. We propose a Differentiated Services based model for the Data
Link Layer that allows each data stream to be locally enhanced depending on its
actual requirements. This is implemented by a set of independent data link
modules that simultaneously provide different QoS levels over the wireless
link. Each module exports dynamic performance metrics, thus supporting the
composition of flexible end-to-end services.
