Bill Joy is known for his central role in the development of many
important technological innovations, including Berkeley UNIX, the NFS
network file system, the SPARC microprocessor architecture, and most
recently, the Java language.
In addition to his scientific contributions, Bill Joy has become known
for his visionary criticism on societal implications of technology.
Quoting from a biographical sketch provided by Sun, "As part of his role
as Chief Scientist, Bill has been investigating the nature of the
emerging 21st century sciences and technologies. His cover article in
the April, 2000 issue of Wired Magazine, entitled `Why the Future
Doesn't Need Us' has ignited a worldwide discussion of some dangers from
and ethical issues in the development of these technologies."
