Just returned from Noblesville, Indiana where I had the opportunity to
build my own ukulele. It's something I've always wanted to do. I
took a week long class from Geoff Davis at the Blue Stone Folk
School. He learned how to build ukuleles from Mike Chock, one of the
great Hawaiian ukulele builders. It was a lot of fun. With a lot of
Geoff's help I made a soprano ukulele out of solid mahogany. It has a
nice mellow sound which will get better with age.

That is sweet! I have built an acoustic guitar a long time ago when I
lived in California. It was a lot of fun, but not having the time or
space anymore has put a stop to my luthier side. I imagine the Uke
would be a very simple and fun build. Good to hear you made it and
are playing it. Congrats. By the way how much did you pay for
materials or was it rolled into the class?

That is another dream of mine. For years I have been wanting to go to
the Beamer family's "Aloha Music Camp" where one of the activities is
to build your own uke. The whole weeklong immersion into Hawaiian
culture, music, and dance would be like heaven for me! Check out the
