Well, I got this Ukulele for Christmas and I am hooked. Although my
fat fingers are WAY too big for the tight little fret spacings on it I
am having some success with it. I poked around for a group or club to
join in the Salt Lake area and didn't find any. So that is why I
started this group. Hopefully I can get some interest and it will get
to be a fun thing. So here is a little about me.

I have played the guitar off and on (mostly off) for about 15 years
and I am not musically gifted. The Uke has been a lot of fun so far
and my interest in it is quickly becoming an addiction. I have been
playing the Uke for 3 days now and I have most of the major chords
down. So naturally I have a few songs that I can strum through pretty
well also. The Uke I have right now is a Lanikai LU-21. I think I
might have to get a little bigger Uke so I have a chance at some of
the chord fingerings. I am having some trouble with the tuning of the
Uke. It seems to be in tune with open strings , but when I try and
use the relative tuning it gets all messed up. I believe this is due
to the intonation of the Uke and the deflection of the string as it is
pressed down on the fretboard. I have read that Ukes are hard to keep
in tune, but I didn't realize that this would happen. Does anyone
know if the quality of the Uke will change this at all or is this an
issue with all of them?

Hello Sabadam!
This group sounds like lots of fun.
I have a number of ukes and have found that the only ones I can tune
well by relative tuning are my flea and fluke. Even my Kamaka doesn't
tune up right that way. I guess I don't really have a good answer
other than that. I have a Lanikai lu-11 and it's the one I pull out
when my 2 young boys are around because it's not a huge deal if it
gets knocked around a bit. Needless to say, since I am a stay-at-home
Mom, it's the one I use the most because the boys always want to be in
the middle of everything I do.

Hello Sabadam, and thank you for forming this group. I hope it takes
off. I also have a Lanikai LU-21 and have found it to intone better
than most cheap (under $75) ukes. However, like hulagirl, the only
one
I have found that is near perfect is my flea. The fretboard is also
a
little wider and therefore easier to play for those of us with big
fingers.

OK, thanks for the info. It's good to know that I am not doing
something wrong.

Hey Guys,

My name is Elijah and I moved to Salt Lake City about 6 years ago. I
was born and raised in Hawaii and started playing the Ukulele at the
age of four. I was very excited when i received the invite on this
group and thank you for the oppurtunity. It seems like this will be a
lot of fun as the Ukulele is my biggest hobby. Some insight on your
tuning issues, I am not familiar with the Lanikai brand as I was
almost a die hard kamaka person until recently purchasing a cheaper
baritone ukulele. Some issues that I have noticed is poor
manufacturing of the ukulele itself. Their has been some situations
where I have had to steam bend the neck of the ukulele to try and get
a better angle for the frets to line up to its peak level of
performance (I have only been successful in doing this 3 out of 5
times). I can look at an ukulele and tell you after strumming a little
bit if you have a bigger issue than you think and show you some simple
tuning techniques as I tune by ear and some simple pick tune methods
that would make it real simple for tuning. Maybe one day we could
meet up and I can show you a thing or two. Let me know.

Thanks Elijah I think I will take you up on that one day and let me
just say welcome and it is good to have you in the group. I have
heard that tuning issues can be because of cheap construction and that
is what I think this is. I was looking at some of the professional
players and their ukes look a lot bigger and better. I really just
want to get this thing as close as possible so that I can learn on
it. I plan to get a better quality one at some later date when I know
a little more about what I want so I wouldn't want to do something as
drastic as steam bending the neck.

Im trying to upload some videos but my videos exceed the limit. Can we possibly increase the limit to 16 - 20 mb?

Thanks, Eli

I can't see a way to do that. We have 100 MB of space for files, but
I don't see a limit on the size of any individual upload.

Interesting.

I placed some links and files on the page for local music sheets, uke
chords, etc. I also placed a couple of songs on there too. Its more of
a challenge to find the music sheet to the song and try playing along
with the song. Figure out the strumming technique and feeling the aloha
spirit that goes along with it. And when comfortable, sing along with
it too. I am also going to put some sheets of music I wrote that is fun
to play and sing with little kids (I perform at elementary schools
across the valley and these are some songs that I use). Feel free to
let me know if either of you need help tuning, free lessons, etc. I can
also tune over the phone so feel free to call me on my mobile at
801.556.5802. I love Jam sessions and I will post up some jam dates
that are coming up along with some luaus and festivals.
