Hi Kelly, we should be able to accommodate your schedule with pre-rides. A pre-ride usually happens about a week before the scheduled brevet, and the purpose is to verify the route sheet, check for road constuction/closures, etc., and/or to allow for volunteers to ride the course for ACP/RUSA credit and then work as a volunteer during the ride. So if anybody wants to pre-ride any of our brevets, please let me know and we'll work out a date for the pre-ride.
A permanent is a bit different in that it is always available for somebody to ride (with a pre-registration). The RUSA permanent library got revamped a few years ago, so not all of our brevet routes are currently approved as permanents, but it is easy enough to submit a route to get it approved as a perm. If anybody wants to add a perm route, please let me know and either I can do it or I can help you thru the process.
So for example, if somebody wanted to ride the Wasatch Front 300k that is scheduled for May 11, but would like to ride it instead on May 4, then that could be a pre-ride for ACP credit. If instead somebody wanted to ride that route in August, we would get the route approved as a perm and then you could register and ride it in August.
The biggest difference between riding a route as a brevet vs a perm is probably ACP vs RUSA sanctioning, which only really matters for some awards and for qualifying for some international events; and you would usually get a much bigger group to ride with in the scheduled brevet. (But you can ride perms in a group as well.)
