Hey all

So I am planning on doing my first 300k on the 13th.  In looking at the map, I am wondering how you all are handling food and water?  It will likely be quite warm.  I am seeing a sinclair in Elberta that I think would be important to stop at before the climb.  I am seeing a place to fill up bottles and maybe get snacks in Eureka at mile 46, but then nothing until Nephi at 115.  Will you all be carrying 4-5 water bottles and a lot of food?  Should I bring my water filtration kit and hope that there will be a river somewhere?  Is there  a good fill up place that I am not seeing?

Kelly , A couple of years ago when I rode that I went to a Subway restaurant and had them build a club sandwich that was only filled with provolone cheese and vegetables and not any dressings. It was cut into pieces about 2 inches long that I individually wrapped in plastic. Every hour or so I had a sandwich with some water. I rode my touring bicycle with three bottles. I never left a convenience store without filling up my bottles. Previous year I had a 50oz waist hydration pack for that ride. For me the bottles were just enough though. Good luck.

Hi Kelly and others,

The Sinclair in Elberta is closed, but there is water one block south at the LDS church pavilion. This route is a change up from prior years where we rode this classic loop, but I guess it doesn't dovetail with the 400 and 600 routes. My "classic" Backroads 300K route has services every 40 or so miles.

Anyway, there used to be services in Lynndyl but they have closed I believe. I just made some calls and between the basketball courts and the building, on the north end of the city park (~ 50 E Center St), are some potable water spigots. That would be key for me too, as the haul back to Nephi has about a bunch of climbing and no services. I'll make some phone calls this morning on that.

One year, during the 600K, a rider stopped at the sheetrock factory at mile 91.6 (of this year's 300K route) to get water. He ended up DNFing due to the heat.

For such routes, I sometimes will carry a third bottle, underneath and forward of my bottom bracket using this tool from my site. (We are way overstocked, so we have them at below cost at 50% off...let me know I can bring some along if anyone wants to purchase one).

Hi all,

There are currently no controles marked on the 300k map for this year. Will they be added?

Yes, I'm working on adding more info to the 300 & 400k routes this week, I just wanted to get the routes pushed out asap so people could review the course. In the meantime, please review the 600k course for details about services & control points.

Another option we have on long, hot courses like this is we could add a volunteer control at any point along the course to refill food & water. In the past we haven't done this due to lack of volunteers, but if anybody has a volunteer who would like to staff a control, please let me know. They would just need to be at the control by the opening time, and wait there until every rider has passed thru. Or if anybody would want to pre-ride the course and then work as a volunteer during the brevet.

Is it correct that there are no resupply options between mile 46 and mile 114 on the 300k route?

There is water at the city park in Lynndyl at mile 81, about 3 blocks off course.

Kelly - another take.

I really like my low profile, smaller, 70 oz. bladder Camelbak. It's just a water bladder with a very small amount of storage for my important things like cell phone and credit card and a bit of extra food backup, and room for shedded vest or arm warmers.  I keep it light so it doesn't bother me to wear even on hot days. Wouldn't want the bigger bulkier 100 oz. bladder size and can't deal with hip packs.

I unquestionably stay hydrated better because it's easier/faster to drink and I drink more frequently.  It also allows me to run electrolyte drink in my 2 bottles which is especially important on hot days.

And with a total capacity of 110 ounces (the bladder plus the 2 bottles) it's like having 5+ bottles.  Personally, I like to minimize stops as I feel my legs do better that way and it allows me to go up to 5 hours even on a hot day.

Used to be a bias against Camelbaks amongst the cool kids and racers but that has really changed, watching a bit of Unbound last weekend I'd estimate a third of the field was wearing them.

And it will keep your on bike setup tight so you don't look like a homeless person or a junk show bikepacker with crap hanging off your bike in every direction.

Just my 2 cents...

Water at mile 81 means there should be fluids roughly every 40-50 miles on the route, I think. Unless it’s 90+ degrees, that’s still two bottle territory for me.

Lynddl being water-only does mean a big stretch without food for 300k riders, so plan accordingly.

I like your two cents. I may give that a thought.  I really do struggle to stay hydrated. I don’t like stopping, unless absolutely necessary. I only stopped twice on the 200k I did last week. That was about right.

My plan at the moment is to carry 4 bottles, two in the normal places and 2 in a cage I can attach to my seat post. Thought I might attach my rear rack so I can bring a small pack with a few more supplies. Though that rack and pack adds a ton of weight.  I am also toying with putting on my clip on aeros. I find them super helpful on longer rides. I’m too slow to stay in a pack, so no danger there.
