Do we have any members that reside in Utah County? I am seeking some advice on a new perm route.

Best,
Rando Richard

Hi Taylor,

This an old route that has now become inactive and I want to reactivate it. How is the bike path along the shoulder or base of Timp? Are there a lot of people walking there, in which case I would just take a road instead?

Cheers,

Murdock Canal Trail along the base of Timp is excellent for cyclists. Yes there are runners, people walking, etc. but it is a wide trail with plenty of cyclists so people are aware of them.

Here’s a suggested similar route that would almost entirely avoid city streets https://maps.app.goo.gl/YK9ALNwJVQCT4w6y9

The trail can be busy depending on time of day, but it is wide and well made. I have done basically this same route quite a lot and I love it.

Though if I might make a suggestion, I would reverse the route. Going up Timp from the Sundance side has busy stretches where there is virtually no shoulder. I personally find going up the American Fork side to be much safer.

I agree with Taylor on climbing up via American Fork Canyon. And since this is a randonneuring group, I would also offer the suggestion that the Alpine Loop is a lot of fun after the road closes to vehicle traffic in late fall and in the short time window prior to our first major snowfall of the season. One of my colder road rides with a low temp of 18 degrees F at the summit that morning but I had plenty of additional layers packed, and no traffic to deal with.

So Royal...you want MORE climbing? I wonder how much more that spur to Tibble Fork adds? 400-500 ft?

With perms, one can elect to reverse the route if desired, but yeah, the Sundance side has zippo shoulder, so better going down it, rather than crawling up it....

But Royal...isn't the Sundance side where you did you half Everest? Where did you start each lap?

Tibble Fork adds 675 ft of climbing. You know me, I like climbing 😊 Where I live now I have to do hill repeats to get any elevation.

Yes, I did my half Everest on Sundance side between the turnoff to Sundance from Provo Canyon Rd and entrance to Sundance parking lot 18x. In total I’ve climbed the Sundance side 30x according to Strava. Alpine loop is my favorite ride and I’ve only done it a few times the reverse route, but I agree the shoulder is better from the Timp side. https://www.strava.com/activities/4008391631

Richard, the Hike a Bike section on the Lehi Rail Trail at mile 42.8 doesn't exist anymore. They've since rebuilt the bridge over Triumph Blvd.

Also, at mile 49.1 where the route crosses Alpine Hwy. This is a fairly busy intersection with no light. Cars coming the opposite direction are on a hill and have a tendency to gun it across the intersection to beat cross traffic. It's a bit dicey. I would suggest going down to 300 N which does have a light or staying on 1120 N instead of taking a right at 150 W. Cross Alpine Hwy there to 200 E and then go from there to Art Dye. Either of those routes would be safer to get across Alpine Hwy.

Add Cascade Springs and South Fork.

South Fork was in the original version. Here is a CW route including Tibble Fork: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/52414510. 4800 vert.

The one thing I do not like is descending down Provo Canyon. The bike path is usually so crowded that cycling downhill is impractical. I usually just take the highway.

David, I updated my original route to go further south to avoid the busy intersection with no light.

A version including Cascade Springs: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30761317. 6800 vert. That is pushing the limit for meeting the cut off time of 6:40 (for me).

Per Royal’s suggestion I went ahead and took the route up Tibble Fork. It only added around 300 feet of vertical and the best part, is that there’s potable water there so people can top off their bottles before continuing onto the top.

I’m game to do it someday mid week next week, but not on a weekend where there’s more traffic. Anybody game?
