Greetings  Group,

On the old permanent plan, I designed this route and rode it once or twice but as you might suspect, the freeway is daunting. I guess we could shortcut it back over big Mountain, but there’s some gravel involved and maybe more vertical???

Hi Richard,

I’ve mapped out a similar route, but starting at Liberty Park and using Jeremy Ranch Road and the backside of Big Mountain to return. Jeremy Ranch is passable on 38s, but probably not fun on anything narrower. There’s about 1500 feet of extra climbing that way.

My issue with this route (other than I80), is the road around Rockport Res has zero shoulder and is usually very busy with trucks hauling boat trailers on Saturday afternoon (when most riders would likely be riding here).
I have no problem riding that section, but I would not advocate using it on a perm because I think a lot of riders would not be comfortable riding there.
You could bypass that part by going on the rail trail, but then you have uneven surfaces and it becomes more of a gravel ride.

I always use the rail trail when riding up there. I’ve done it on 44s and 32s. Never had a problem with the latter, but it’s probably not ideal if your bike has narrower clearances.

Ken, The section you mentioned going around the shore of the reservoir, isn’t it the route that BCC uses on their “big ride” every year?

It sounds like this route is dead in the water. I was hoping the gravel would be similar to the road between Evanston and Coalville, which can be ridden on 25 or 28 mm tires.

At least some of my other routes are getting a little bit of attention as shown in the most recent issue of our trade magazine. I designed several Four Corners routes due to the urging of a guy in Texas, but I’ve actually never taken the time to go down and ride them!

Yes, riding that section with BCC is why I hesitate to recommend it for a perm :(

I think that area could support a really great out-and-back to Coalville or Morgan. Lost Creek, Chalk Creek, and Echo Frontage road along I80 are all really great riding.
Or a gravel route along the rail trail and Jeremy Ranch Road.
