Sealant Question

Greetings Group,

Whenever I install a new tubeless tire I end up with some sealant on the floor. I typically put 2 oz. of Orange in (as instructed) as I am using 700 x 28 tires. Should I start with more, like 2.5 or 3 oz. as there is invarabiley a "given quantity" on the floor that made its way out of the tire and rim.

I seat the tire first (use soapy water to help) then pull the valve cores, turn the tire so valve is parallel to the floor and inject it into the tire. I get the least out of the tire this way.

The most I've ever gotten out of the tire is when I blew the bead after putting the sealant in first. I don't do that anymore.

I tend to start with less sealant than recommend. I use Orange Seal Endurance sealant. About 1.25 oz for a Continental 5000 in a 32

I inflated the tires on the firm side and do a easy ride with lots of slow speed turns to guarantee sealant is evenly distributed. I then add another.5 -1oz of sealant and inflate to 65-70 psi riding pressure. I stick to asphalt and smooth dirt roads.

Very similar process to below. Seat the tire and add through valve, no issues. 

Now, getting tire off without a mess… I have a syringe to suck as much as I can but that is the real mess to me.

Norman, you start with soapy water and then do you rinse it out before adding sealant? 

Matthew...BIG CONGRATS on your recent world record (s). Did I see your Strava upload correctly? 30.5 MPH for 200 miles? Ouch.

It’s a pretty small amount of soapy water just lightly applied to the bead and sidewall. None in the tire itself. If I feel like a lot got in I’ll sometimes rinse it!

I don’t have an air compressor. I seat the tire first using an Airshot. Then I put the sealant in and use the Airshot again to inflate the tire. Put enough air pressure in the tire to make it seat on the rim. Make sure you can take the Valve Core in and out of the Valve to put the air, sealant, air into the tire. Then you are good to go.

Steve, 

Very cool that you had a couple ties to it! 

That value is a pretty interesting place as far as cycling goes. RAAM and the Tour Divide both cross through there.
