Super 600

Starting on Wednesday, Ken accompanied three intrepid souls from Colorado to finish our local Wasatch Super 600. They did the 3-day version, riding in the dark, only for an hour or two in the mornings. That was Ken's third finish. Nice work!!

(I'm guessing Jessett, but I'm not sure.)

Hat’s off to Ken !!!

I was very thankful to have Ken’s company when I did this Utah Super Six, his knowledge of the route and where to stop for burritos, was invaluable. I’ve never filled water bottles from a spring fed waterfall on the side of the road before. 

The side notes about history and landmarks were conversations I’ve not forgotten. Did you know that the Wasatch range is the only East West oriented mountain range in the USA? 

Collecting unique Super Sixes has been a hobby of mine for years, I’ve never had to ride one alone, as special as this ride is, the company was even more memorable.

Hi Foon,! I'm the Ken who stayed overnight at your place the time all the hotel rooms were booked out after one of my Colorado rides, 2018 maybe?

Hi Dan! On day 1, we climb over Wolf Creek Pass, which is in the Uinta Mountain range, which runs east-west; and the rest of the climbing is in the Wasatch Plateau or Wasatch Front (which runs N-S).

But I neglected to share with this group the story of Naapi and the Chickadees, so they may have to return to find out why aspen groves look the way they do ;D

Where did you fill your bottles? Aspen Grove loop? How many SR600s have you stacked up now?

While they were passing through Mount Pleasant (my residence) I was able to visit with them at a restaurant, but failed to get a picture. Of note was Corrine Warren, our RUSA magazine editor and two other fine gentlemen from Colorado.

Richard, we filled up at the Butler Fork spring in BCC. I pointed out the Alpine Loop Icebox, but since we were descending nobody stopped there

Richard, 

With the help of many friends, I’ve been lucky enough to complete 13 different Super Sixes, all very unique, and gratifying experiences with others, to share the memories with. 

I love getting to see remote parts of the country on the bike, with fellow Super Six minded Randos. 

We’ve worked to build groups for these adventures that comprise locals, when it works, and just about anyone that likes to ride, and for the most part have put together parties that are compatible and in general want to watch out for each other. 

The 60 hour time limit was a game changer, and allows much of the ride to be done in the daylight, which is my preference, I can ride in the dark at home ;=) 

For me these Super Sixes are the perfect balance of Adventure, Challenge, time on the bike, and gratification. 

I’m great full to all that have built these Super Six routes…. Thank You, Richard…and thankful that new Super Sixes that  are still being created, which allows for more experiences without going international.

I was 57 when I did mine, but I’m betting there are others older than I was. Now for sure, but at what age did they do their 1st? Plus, mine was the 50 hours, not the current 60…. Definitely easier now. But still tough!

And that was post "crash" wasn't it? That is great. 

I was 61 or 62 when I did mine, also on the 50-hour schedule, but I suspect there are much older finishers.

To your question….. I don’t know the answer, and the data is not available, to me, although the RUSA web team has easy access to to all the RUSA Super Six completions and the ages of those RUSA members when they completed them. 

I’d like to complement Deb…. I did a couple of the 50 hour Super Sixes and they just weren’t appealing, due to not being able to see the sights with the extra 10 hours of night time riding. I can ride in the dark at home, and see the same sights, which defeats the reasons to travel to these remote rides :=)

I’d also like to complement Roger Hillas, who rode with us on a New Super Six that he created earlier this year. Roger was 70+ and he rode as strong as any of our group of 5. Roger, not only road strong, but also smart. Roger babied me on a steep down hill gravel section, knowing that my gravel skills were not great. With Rodger’s first hand knowledge of the route, he wisely had us enjoy the sun rise from a picnic table, so we would not stupidly descend the most technical gravel section of the ride in the early morning darkness, I was thankful, as I would not have know any better.  

I can only dream of still riding Super Sixes in a couple years, after I turn 70, but Roger has inspired me, and I hope I’m up to the challenge.

Anything I can do to promote these Super Sixes, would be my passionate pleasure.

In addition to the Oldest and Youngest, a data point that might help us inspire more to try a Super Six, could be the number of riders from each State that have done one or more. My guess is that many states have zero, and knowing a rando could be the first in their state to have done a Super Six might prompt them to give it a go.

I guess it’s possible in theory to design a boring SR 600, but in practice the elevation requirement pretty much ensures that there is going to be plenty worth seeing, and I’m all with Dan on being able to see it in the light.

Plus there has to be a lot of regional variation. Any SR 600 in the East is going to have a lot of relatively short climbs, compared to the west, and they are likely to be a lot steeper that the highway standard of 6 - 8%. The NNE SR 600 that Dan and I (and Brad Tanner, John D’Elia, and Jacob Layer) did has whole strings of climbs that top out above 15% grade, but I doubt any of them, except the more gentle Kancamagus Highway, took more than an hour to ascend.
