Has anyone debricked a wifi router with a JTAG cable?

I have a (mostly) non-responsive Linksys WRT54G v1.0 wifi router.
Following some openwrt wiki links, I'm preparing to build a JTAG cable
with the intention of trying to debrick the box. I was wondering if
anyone reading this list has done this or something similar in the
past and might be willing to offer some advice, reassurance or other
minor hand-holding?
