Searching on Custom Model

Hi,

         Here at BYU we are wondering what is the best way to have a webscript that will search on some of the metadata from a custom model that we have created. We search for this metadata and the results will send back multiple items. We are doing an X-path search on the model but we are noticing significant performance issues with doing this. Does anyone have a best practices on how to do this? Also we are running on Alfresco 4.0.D with a linux Red Hat box.
