I'm Bekke Robb, one of the founding members of UTABS and the current
state rep on the Sibling Leadership Network board. I would like it if
everyone would let me know a couple things about themselves which will
help us grow this group a bit more rapidly.
Are you a sibling? (If not tell us why you are interested in this
group)
How are you involved in your siblings life?
What are your concerns about your future with your sibling?
What are your current needs and concerns as you deal with your sibling
in day to day life?
What would you like to see UTABS offer that would be beneficial to
you?
Thanks! I'm looking forward to meeting people and working together to
grow UTABS into a large, supportive community where we can turn to
each other for answers and assistance.
My answers to these questions...
I am a sibling, my younger sister was born with a mild intellectual
disability. I am also interested in supporting siblings because as the
Executive Director of Self Reliance of Utah, (a nonprofit which
assists adults with mild cognitive disabilities learn and maintain the
skills necessary for living independently), I frequently speak with
family members who feel lost and alone as they try to help their
family member with a disability.
I am currently more involved in my sisters life than I would like to
be only because she is a client with Self Reliance and I'm the only
staff member... my goal is to be able to give her rides when she needs
them, be available by phone to help with things she doesn't understand
or to listen when a friend supports her or disappoints her, mainly
just be available to her and not have to be so involved in the details
of her life.
I don't really have any future concerns or current needs, I think I'm
the most realistic in my family about the future of my sister after my
parents are no longer able to play the role they currently play in her
life and I am trying to plan well for being her primary contact within
the family for everything she needs assistance with that Self Reliance
won't provide.
