Title: "Sensor Networks in Two Keywords: In-Network Processing for
Data-Centric Applications"

Speaker: Dr. Rami Abielmona, VP Research & Engineering, Larus
Technologies Corporation, Ottawa, Ontario

Day and Time: Wednesday, May 21, 2008, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Location: Room BA 1230, Bahen Centre for Information Technology,
University of Toronto - St. George Campus

Abstract
++++++
The talk will present current research and development in sensor
networking. We will discuss current applications of data fusion being
developed at Larus Technologies Corporation. Fusion has been tackled
from many different angles, and for various assorted applications. The
underlying goal is the analysis of a refined state estimate for the
process under observation. Using machine learning and data fusion
techniques, we design tools for collaborative signal processing,
tasking and querying as well as data aggregation and dissemination. We
are developing a decision-support system that deals with data source
fusion using a predictive modeling technique. The novel architecture
is capable of providing assistance for decision makers, as well as
tasking control sources to better cover the real-world environment in
question. Some user applications of such an exploited technology are:
object detection, classification and tracking, integrated views, state
estimation and habitat monitoring. We will also outline some of the
requirements and challenges faced by the sensor networking community,
and discuss methods to advance the field altogether.

Biography

Dr. Rami Abielmona (S’00-M’02) is VP Research & Engineering at Larus
Technologies Corporation. He received his B.A.Sc., M.A.Sc. and Ph.D.
degrees in computer and electrical engineering, from the School of
Information Technology and Engineering at the University of Ottawa,
where he still works as a Part-Time Professor. His research interests
include sensor networking, multi-sensor data fusion and
computationally intelligent computing architectures. He received the
”Best Student Poster Award” at the Knowledge Network Conference in
2002, and the ”Student Research Excellence Scholarship” by CITO in
2003. He was a CMC Success Story in 2005 for his Ph.D. research. He
received the NSERC Industrial Research and Development Fellowship
(IR&DF) in 2007. He is currently the Chair of the IEEE Computational
Intelligence Society Educational Activities committee, the Vice-Chair
of the local IEEE Computer Society chapter and the Vice-Chair of the
IEEE Ottawa Robotics Competition committee. He also became a licensed
Professional Engineer in Ontario in 2008.
