[CND, 07/24/96] When Chinese men's gymnastics team finished second in the
team's competition on Monday, not many people seemed to pay attention to the
silver medal they earned. Instead, the blunders they made stayed in people's
minds. Perhaps sliver was not the right color on their medals.

They wasted no time to prove it. In Wednesday's men's individual all-around
finals, Chinese gymnasts came out aggressively and positioned themselves in
medal contention immediately. Although the young ZHANG Jin1jing1 and SHEN3
Jian4 came up short and finished 4th and 5th, respectively, world champion
LI3 Xiao3shuang1 performed nearly flawlessly in every rotation, putting con-
stant pressure on his rivals from Russia and Belarus. Finally, by perfectly
executing a daring combination on the high bar, his final routine, Li claimed
the victory with a smile on his landing. His individual gold medal might well
belong to the whole team, because it is GOLD that is their true color.

"A gold medal has been my target for 10 years," said 22-year-old Li, who
ranked the victory as his greatest. Li also claimed before the competitions
that he would not go home without a gold. Now with the first Chinese Olympic
all-around gold medal in bag, is he ready to go home? No so quickly. He has
plans for Sunday and Monday, when men's individual contests will be held.

Chinese women swimmers picked up two more medals. LIN2 Li4, the world record
holder in women's 200-meter individual medley, finished third in the event
behind the star of the Games, Irishwoman Michelle Smith, the first triple
gold medalist at Atlanta. Women's 4x100-meter medley relay team won another
bronze, bringing the total of Chinese swimming medals to five (1-2-2).

ZHANG1 Bing1 added another bronze for China in men's double trap shooting,
while Chinese athletes scored three other important victories in team
competitions. Men's basketball team posted an impressive win over Argentina
and is on its way to enter the final eight for the first time in Olympics.
Softball team won easily and is getting closer to claim a medal. Finally,
coached by the former great Olympican LANG2 Ping2, women's volleyball team
attacked early and strong against the host team. Before the home crowd got
into the game, Team China was already up 2:0. The final score: China 3,
the United States 1.

There will be more to watch tomorrow, when 13 gold medals await for their
winners. Russia and the United States were the first two countries to
collect double-digit gold medals, with 11 and 10 respectively, but no one
expected that it would take them this long (5 days). Twenty-two nations
have had a share in the 70 gold medals awarded, while the mystery of the
Games remained: When will Germany win a gold? The powerful sports nation
didn't even cash in a medal of any color in Day 5.

1) Ethnic Chinese Cheer Up Athletes from Native Land

Source: World Journal
Contributor: Frank LING

[CND, 07/24/96] Among those waving the Chinese national flags and chanting
in their native Chinese tongue in the audience are two cheer leader groups,
one team is composed of ethnic Chinese residents of Atlanta and other parts
of the US, overseas Chinese students and scholars, and the Chinese staff of
some international enterprises, and the other is the Janlibao team from
China, World Journal reports.

To assist Chinese athletes in ways they can, some 20 local ethnic Chinese
groups joined force to take care of reception, support, news, transportation,
and cheer-leadership. There are approximately 400 volunteers working daily
in the city.

The support group was extremely busy. The Olympic Village is off limits to
the ordinary people and they passed on the chicken soup they time-boiled to
the students and had them relay it to the sick shooter WANG2 Yi4fu1. They
also managed to have Chinese dumplings and cans send to Chinese women's
volleyball players. World and Olympic table tennis champion DENG Yaping was
not use to the low pillow of the village and they delivered two to her.
Whenever the delegation needed transportation they were on their way.

The cheer leader groups were led by persons who know how. They were equipped
with flags, banners carrying slogans, and drums. Their cheers have given
Chinese athletes spiritual and emotional boost.

Chinese reporters were also treated with discount coupons by local Chinese
restaurants and grocery shops.

Why did they do all that voluntarily? "We are overseas, yet have a Chinese
heart," they said.

2) Clarification on LE Jingyi's Press Conference Encounter

[Editor's Note: People's Daily reported that after LE Jingyi won the women's
100-meter freestyle swimming, upon arriving at the media room she was kept
outside by the organizing people. They sent the American silver medalist
and the German bronze medalist in first. Le ended up talking to the media
more than one hour after the other two swimmers. CND Sports Reporter Hong An,
who is at Atlanta, sent in the following report.]

[CND, 07/24/96] According to Aquatics center press chief Kellie Buckley,
there was no blocking of press media room to incoming athelets for press
conference. In fact, LE Jingyi, accompanied by a Chinese translator provided
by ACOG, came to media room and left after winning her first gold in 100m
freestyle. She wanted to wait for her coach before doing press conference.
The press conference wanted her to be there very much.

On July 23 night, silver medalist LIU Liming and her coach ZHAO Ge gave a
very good press conference at Aquatics center. They answered quite a number
of questions. This type of interaction between Chinese team and media would
surely do more good for China. In fact, lots of foreign press wanted to
interview Chinese athletes and coaches but rarely got chances. Using media
to voice our side of story is clever and necessary.

Our athletes have gone on top of the world, but our supporting teams are
still far behind. To become a sports super power, we have a lot to catch up.
(CND Sports Reporter: Hong An, Atlanta)

3) Pre-Game Jitters of Table Tennis

[CND, 07/23/96] Head coach CAI4 Zhen4hua2 said that the Chinese table
tennis team will try to secure two gold medals while aiming at all four
in the Atlanta Olympics, Reuters and UPI report. Players are in good form,
CAI said.

China's KONG3 Ling4hui1, the reigning world champion and World Cup title
holder, will try to win his first Olympic men's single's title to become
the grand slam winner in the world history after Sweden's J-O Waldner.
Teammate WANG2 Tao1 and LIU2 Guo2liang2 are also strong contenders for the
men's single's gold medal.

Sweden's Waldner and Persson, Belgium Saive, French Gatien, South Korea's
Yoo Nam Kyu and Kim Tack Soo are also eyeing on men's single's title.

WANG Tao and LUU3 Lin2, men's double's champion in Barcelona, and KONG
Linghui and LIU Guoliang will also try to win men's double's titles. Their
most prominent opponents are South Korea's Kim Tack Soo/Kang Hee Chan and
Lee Chul Seung/Yoo Nam Kyo, two new pairs with a seasoned player and a less
known player in each pair.

In women's singles, other than the reigning Olympic and world champion,
China's DENG4 Ya4ping2, her teammates QIAO2 Hong2 and LIU2 Wei3 are also
great contenders for the gold. Chinese Taipei's CHEN2 Jing4, Hong Kong's
Chai Po Wa (QI2 Bao3hua2) and Japan's Chire Koyama (XIAO-shan1 Zhi4-li4 are
also hopefuls. Women's doubles competition will likely be dominated by the
Chinese players.

On Monday Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell stopped by the table tennis training
hall and got his chance to play with KONG Linghui a bit. (Frank LING)

4) CHEN Jing Gets Undivided Attention

[CND, 07/24/96] Chinese Taipei's table tennis player, CHEN2 Jing4, competed
on Tuesday, and the Chinese table tennis women's team paid a virtually
all-out honor to watch the game, World Journal reported Wednesday. Senior
coach ZHANG1 Xie4lin2, the reigning world and Olympic champion DENG4
Ya4ping4, and teammate QIAO2 Hong2 watched and thrashed out every move of
CHEN on the side. (Frank LING)
____ ____ ____

5) CHEN Xinhua on His Way to Play Table Tennis in Atlanta

[CND, 07/22/96] CHEN Xinhua, now 36, a "main force" of the Chinese team
back in the 38th World Championships in Gathenberg, Sweden, is on his way
to Atlanta to contend for a medal in men's singles, representing England.
He missed the Barcelona Olympics because of China's objection that he had
not lived in another nation long enough to represent it. Before the Atlanta
Olympics, CHEN went to train in his hometown of Fujian, China, and he had
problems getting a plane ticket to Beijing before flying to Atlanta. His
British manager, the British Olympic Association and its sponsor, the Delta
Airlines, have made an elaborated connection schedule for CHEN to arrive in
Atlanta on time for men's singles in table tennis. The Olympics is CHEN's
first, and will likely be his last as well. He will likely move to live in
Fujian with his wife, British born Jeanette, and their three children in the
long run. (Frank LING)

6) Young Swimmers Gaining Olympic Experiences

[CND, 07/20/96] Chinese swimmer ZENG1 Qi3liang4 took seventh place in men's
100m breaststroke, the highest place ever won by the Chinese men's team at
Olympics. Chinese swim team at this Olympics is a young team, 19 of the 21
members are first time Olympians, and winning medals and gaining experiences
are both important, commented by head coach ZHANG1 Xiong2. (CND Sports
Reporter: Hong An, Atlanta)
