Subject: csc490 and 491: great research opportunities
User-Agent: Mutt/1.4i
Approved: Associate Chair
What's a "capstone"?
--------------------
csc490 and 491 offer students a new way to gain research
experience in computer science as part of their undergrad degree
Unlike the csc494/495 project courses, students do not have
to find a professor and a project; the 490 and 491 professors and project
themes are already defined, and students just need to submit a ballot
to be considered for admission to these courses.
"Capstone" is a term from architecture that refers to a culmination
or crowning achievement.
Course description
------------------
"This full-year half-course gives students experience solving a substantial
problem that may span several areas of Computer Science. Students will define
the scope of the problem, develop a solution plan, produce a working
implementation, and present their work using written, oral, and (if suitable)
video reports. Class time will focus on the project, but may include some
lectures. The class will be small and highly interactive. See
www.cs.utoronto.ca/~csc490h and www.cs.utoronto.ca/~csc491h for this year's
topic themes and required preparation.
Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor; CGPA 3.0/enrolment in a
CSC subject POSt"
This year's capstones
---------------------
The course description in the calendar is intentionally generic, so that
each year, we can offer the courses on different themes. Here are
the details about this year's capstones:
csc490: Innovative use of tablet-computers for interactive tasks
Professor Ravin Balakrishnan
http://www.dgp.toronto.edu/~ravin/courses/csc490f04w05/
csc491: Artist driven techniques
for interactive computer graphics modeling and animation.
Professor Karan Singh

How to apply
------------
To apply for enrolment in this course, please submit the following material to
the undergraduate office by August 15, 2004:
- Your contact information (Name, Student Number, current email address
- An updated transcript (unofficial one is fine)
- A short (1 paragraph) statement as to why you want to take the course.
This statement should include any pertinent information that you feel
makes you particularly qualified for this year's course topic (e.g.,
relevant courses taken, work or hobby experience in the topic area).
Acceptance decisions will be made by August 25, 2004. Applications
submitted after August 15, 2004 will only be considered if space permits.

This is *exactly* the kind of research opportunity you should be pursuing
if you have any thoughts about going to graduate school.
