Injuries Mounting for Hokies
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com, August 12, 2011

Virginia Tech's football team is made up of a bunch of walking wounded right now, some of which will scrimmage tomorrow, and some of which will not. This is a very important scrimmage for the Hokies, and it's unfortunate that they have so many nagging injuries right now.

BeamerBall.com announced on Twitter this afternoon that Boykin, Asante and Cole would be out. We know that Norman, DeChristopher, Shuman and Coles will be out as well, while Nosal, Tariq Edwards, Jayron Hosley and Kris Harley are probably. Everyone else is simply a guess at this point.

With Thomas, Leal and Young all injured, the Hokies are awfully thin at quarterback. Even if all three quarterbacks are able to scrimmage on Saturday, they will all likely be limited. The defense won't be allowed to hit them, and they won't be allowed to run.

Those injuries are also impacting the backup quarterback race. Leal and Young are competing with Ju-Ju Clayton with that job, but it never seems that Leal and Young are ever healthy at the same time. Right now Leal remains the #2 quarterback, but that could change if he's not able to practice or scrimmage effectively.

Hopefully Tariq Edwards will be able to play. He emerged from spring practice as Virginia Tech's #1 backer, but he has been limited this August because of a hamstring injury. As a result, Telvion Clark has been getting all the reps at the #1 backer. If Edwards can be effective when he returns from his injury, there should be a very good competition for that starting position. Hopefully it starts tomorrow.

Tomorrow's practice will be in Lane Stadium at 4pm. The scrimmage will start a little later, most likely between 4:15 and 4:30. It will be open to the public, and free of charge. Fans can park anywhere, and the west stands will be open. No recording devices are allowed.
