Planet surface of Avalon
( Aware that he was no telepath, but long experienced in reading people, Sir Gawain was perplexed by his inability to trust any evaluation he made of the Security Chief. It was not that he had seemed an evil may, but he had immediately disobeyed Gawain’s orders, endangered the community and had taken up with the most dangerous being on the planet. Worse still, he refused to accept any truth regarding Morgana. The question was whether he’d been actively poisoned by the witch or whether he had been duped. Morgana had centuries of experience doing that. If Clifton had been altered with some spell or poison, any chance of saving him would decline with every hour. Some of Morgana’s potions could grow in a man’s mind over time. He’d decided to inquire about this medical instrument the visitors had. He didn’t understand it, but he had seen enough of future technology in the twentieth century to give credence that such a thing might be legitimate and not sorcery. What he knew and the visitors did not was that science and sorcery were not mutually exclusive. They could both exist at the same time. Therefore, he decided to interview the woman, Welby.))
Sir Gawain: Can this medical machine be used for harm in any way?
Welby: I suppose someone could use it to do so, but not in my hands I assure you.
Gawain: So ye will have no objection to using it while I am here with ye? Ye can use it on Clifton and then return it. It willna injure the man?
Welby: If i get my scanner back I can scan Clifton from head to toe, believe me I won't hurt him because that goes against my oath as a nurse.
Gawain: knowing that many people violated oaths.: Weel, we’ll give it a try then. However, there will be guards posted. I dinna wish to insult ye, my lady, but protecting my people has to be my first priority, and many of the ...devices ye have are beyond our own ability to properly evaluated them. Sadly, while the rest of ye seem honest enough, your security chief has given us too much reason to be suspicious.
Welby: Well, I've known him for years and while he is stubborn, chauvinistic and in my view a bit backward when it comes to dealing with women, I also know that his loyalty to Starfleet is without question. I realize he can be difficult, no one knows that better than I, but he always has our best interests at heart.
:Gawain nodded to a guard who disappeared briefly and then brought in a box that held the tricorder. The phasers and communicators remained in a locked vault. Gawain opened the box and gave the tricorder to Welby.:
Gawain: We havena touched it in any way. Will it work?
Welby: It looks undamaged, so if it is charging then it should be fine.
Gawain: Charging? What does that mean exactly. :The only charging he was familiar with involved horses and soldiers.:
Welby: Oh, it recharges from sunlight among other ways. It is kind of like when you are very tired and you lie down for a time and sleep, that gives your body time to recharge.
Gawain: I see, so it is like stringing a bow….or loading a pistol? It’s a forced needed to make it operate. Does it involve electricity? We dinna have that here.
Welby: This can use light from the sun to convert into energy.
Gawain: I see; we’ll give it a try. How long will it take?
Welby: Just a few minutes.
Gawain: nodding: Alright, Thank ye, my lady. :turning to the guard.: Ye will protect Mistress Welby and give her any needed assistance needed to make this device work. Absolutely no one is to interfere with her and none of the other members of the visiting group are to interfere.
:With that he took his leave of Welby and went to talk to Clifton, who was under careful guard.:
Gawain: Security Chief, it is an absolute necessity to determine whether or not Morgana has done anything to ye other than deceive ye. Therefore, we will be using your party’s tricorder to run some...scans as Nurse Welby called them. She assures me that they willna hurt ye in any way. Are ye familiar with this scanning?
Clifton: Yes, it's fine. Believe me though, the woman did nothing to me.
Gawain: Your captain will be here with ye when the scans are done. That seems only appropriate since she is your commanding officer.
Clifton: Fine, for all the good it will do any of us.
Gawain: maddeningly polite: While we wait, I’d ask ye to consider how ye’d feel if ye were in my place and had an...uninvited guest...ignore all your orders and then meet with the most dangerous of enemies, one who’d repeatedly tried to kill your king and yourself for that matter. How might ye react to that especially if I then proceeded to defend that person?
Clifton: sarcastically : Yeah, I see your point, but I don't know that she ever did any of that. All I have is your word.
Gawain: We’ve had not years, not decades but centuries of dealing with Morgana. Even her own kind, the other sorceresses of Avalon willna have her in their midst as she has always worked for evil.
Clifton: We'll see, in time.
Gawain: If it turns out ye are merely deceived, I’ll let ye go with a guard to question and interview any one ye wish to question.
Clifton: Very well.
