:: A slight look of worry now crossed Clifton's face. ::
Clifton: Of course, there is one slight risk.
Gavin: One risk? I ken what a shifting magnetic pole is and there is more than one risk.
Clifton: Well, as I said the magnetic field shifts quite a bit, if it should shift dramatically and get ahold of us before I can power our engines back up ....
Gavin: Aye?
Clifton: Well, let's just say that I hope we both have our affairs in order.
Gavin; looking exasperated: Weel before that charming possibility, there is another problem. D’ye nae ken that telepaths and empaths are highly sensitive to magnetic fields?
Clifton: No, I didn't know that.
:: Maybe over the years he had heard something about that but telepaths were something he did not know a lot about. ::
Clifton: Well, I'm sorry if this is uncomfortable for you but we can't risk being detected and blowing this case.
Gavin: Depending on the strength of the field, it could be anything from disorientation, to passing out entirely. Or I may just empty my stomach here and then pass out. Ye might have told me about this prior to our leaving!
Clifton: Okay ... I should have briefed you better, but I honestly never thought this would negatively affect you, Gavin. Just let me know if you feel ill.
Gavin: scowling: Weel, if I am going to hurl my cookies, I’ll do it in your direction.
Clifton: answering with literal sarcasm : Thanks, I appreciate that.
:: Gavin closed his eyes and tried to concentrate on putting up as many mental shields as he could, but his ability to do this was also affected by the magnetic field. He opened them to glance at Clifton:
Gavin: Dinna think to loudly; I canna really shield thoughts in this atmosphere.
Clifton: I'll do my best to keep my thoughts quiet.
:: For a few seconds Clifton considered just how unfair it was that some in this galaxy had telepathic/empathic powers, thus giving them an unfair advantage over normals.
Gavin: Ye’ve a dirty mind, Clifton.
Clifton: shrugging his shoulder in a nonchalant manner : Yeah, I know ... and it sure is fun.
:: The ship remained adrift for another hour, or so, then the silence was interrupted by a beeping noise. Reaching beneath the console, Clifton eased a rather odd looking comm device into his lap. The data that was displayed was quite understandable to Clifton, and he relayed it to Gavin immediately. ::
Clifton: This little item is a Suliban comm device, very difficult to detect by anyone, I had the Security Chief of the starbase contact me through it. As it turned out our friend Silva just left the base in a shuttle, let's see if we can locate her.
Gavin: Good, it will take us away from here. ::Deciding to play with Clifton a bit in revenge for the hours of nausea he’d experienced. :: I canna stand much more of your thought processes. I could make a fortune if I wanted to sell some of your secrets!
Clifton: Nah, a loyal officer like you? Not a chance.
:: Looking over the read-outs, Clifton got a lock on the shuttle which had just left the starbase.::
Clifton: And there she is, heading away at full impulse ... but not following the pre-arranged flight plan. Hmm, I wonder why?
:: Clifton tracked Silva's small vessel as it continued on for almost an hour. ::
Clifton: She's nearing the range of our sensors, I'll have to risk moving closer if we want to keep an eye on her ship.
