:: Clifton lowered his voice to a conspiratorial tone. ::

Clifton:  I do have a plan B in mind, but it might be in a somewhat gray area, legally speaking.  As Security Chief I have ways of monitoring anything on this ship, but if either of you would rather not be involved, then say so now.  Even if this thing should go sideways, I want you to know that the entire responsibility will rest on my shoulders, I'll see to it that you are in the clear, should you decide to be involved.

Colin:: Look, Chief, ye are asking my brother to risk his entire career. That isna fair. Say what ye will, if he is implicated, ye willna have the ability to to take all the responsibility. He’s a senior diplomat, for the Laird’s sake!

:: What the MacLaren brothers did not know was that Clifton would have taken the blame himself and indeed neither of them would be implicated.  However, Gavin was an Ambassador and even the hint of scandal could well disrupt his career.  In the end it would be best to keep both Colin an Gavin shielded from what he had in mind, thereby totally assuring that they could not suffer any backlash if something went wrong.

Gavin:: standing up:: I really have some correspondence to see to. Here, keep the flask and return it to me later, Colin:

Colin: Taking the flask and nodding to Gavin, he waited until Gavin was out the door.:: Gavin will consult his considerable sources to find out about this, but he absolutely canna go beyond that. I, on the other hand, have no such problem. Ye’d be surprised how easily people speak to doctors. Ye dinna even have to read their thoughts or emotions, and they’ll tell ye a lot.

Clifton: Hmm ... I suppose I've never really thought about that before.

Colin: Look, I dinna mind reading her if I can. I can say that she needs to do a medical check because there had been an outbreak of Zoola virus where she left. And then I’ll have chance to chat and charm her a bit. 

Clifton: Okay, it sounds worth a try.  Just tell me one thing though, what the devil is Zoola virus, I've never heard of it.

Colin: laughing: There isna such a thing as Zoola virus. But if presented as a kind of pox that can leave our favorite narcissist badly scarred without quick, preventative treatment, I suspect she’ll come. She’s vain as peacock, and what does she have besides her face?

Clifton: I dunno, from what I've seen her looks aren't anything for her to be proud of, but the idea sounds worth a try.

Colin: What did you have in mind? 

Clifton: I guess the same thing you have in mind, tell her that she might have this virus, she'll head to sick bay and you can do some meaningless scans and tell her she is fine.  Does that sound reasonable to you?
