Sothe first thing that I'd try would be to download the installer and reinstall Recuva (don't bother about uninstalling first it will just overwrite the old one), then try uninstalling it again.

You can get the installer here:

Once downloaded double-click on 'rcsetup153.exe' to reinstall Recuva.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Unfortunately I still haven't been able to uninstall, I've already reinstalled recuva and the error still remains. I tried to do the procedure indicated in the microsoft community pointed out, but I didn't have success either.

A trick I have heard around NSIS error is to rename the 'uninstall.exe' to some other filename eg. 'anyword.exe' in File Explorer and then double click on it to run. (Never had to try that myself though).

I was using recuva to find pictures and videos on a windows xp hard drive, but I keep getting an internal error message. Does anyone know of an alternative program for recovering broken and damaged files?

Hi, I have run the free version of Recuva and whilst I was optimistic as it ran and was finding lots of files, when it completed after 10 hours it states it only found 90 files and ignored 14,000 others. I have tried running with a filter to just look for picture files (which is what the drive contains) but same result and I have cleared all filters and still find there are 14,000 files ignored. Is there anything else I can try?

You will get no different results if you clear a filter after the scan. Run the scan with no filter then scan then add filter. I believe most of the ignored files are files that are still live, but my fellow moderator @Augeas is better versed. I've moved this thread to the recuva discussion board.

You're correct Nergal, the ignored count includes live files and those that don't fit the search criteria (and possibly zero length files and system files etc). So I would clear the search filter and go from there. The live files will still be ignored, but presumably you're not looking for them with Recuva.

The drive was formatted using an Andriod tablet and it now reports that only 4mb of space has been used, so I am assuming by Live files you mean files that have not been deleted. As it only reports use of 4mb (and all the files were Pictures), I am assuming they would not be classed as Live files?

Ok, I reran the scan with no filter, has found less files but is still ignoring just under 11,000. If you add Picture to the filter it makes no difference (and I'm not sure why that would suddenly make the system change them from ignored).

I have now closed the app and restarted the 10 hour scan. It has now found and ignored the original 14,000+ files. If I then put a picture filter on it just knocks the 90 files found down to 89, so this does not seem to be helping. I need it to recognise the 14,000 files that it is ignoring?

If you're using the Wizard, switch to advanced mode (top r/h button). In advanced mode select Options/Actions. Check boxes 1, 2, 3 and 5. Leave box 4 (Deep Scan) and box 6 (Restore folder structure) unchecked. Press OK. You should not need to do another scan. With nothing in the Filename or Path box you should now have zero files ignored.

I've scanned my files 4 times now. I scanned using the Advanced mode and checked those boxes, I also scanned with no boxes checked. I'm still getting over 10,000 ignored files. I need some help, I really need to recover these files, if at all possible.

I've got a non responding external harddisk. Recuva is able to get most from it, it takes only very long to get the 1.5 Tb from the disk. How can I pause the recovery? Or might it be an idea to put a pause button in a next version of recuva?

I think that the answer is that if you want to recover a large amount of data then you just have to accept that it will take some time. Or, try to recover in manageable chunks, which - if you have a list of many hundreds of thousands of files - isn't easy.

I've always thought that a pause function would be illogical, as the underlying data is subject to change at any time. But I've just run a test where I opened an instance of Recuva and scanned, then created and deleted a 2kb file, then scanned again and found, and recovered, the file.

I then ploughed through a few pages of the BBC's website, which used several hundred records from the MFT. I opened another instance of Recuva, and a scan showed no sign of my deleted file, as expected. However I could still recover the file in pristine condition from the first instance of Recuva. This indicates that Recuva holds the file's info in memory, and does not recheck when recovering. So a pause would be possible. Recover is after all a non-invasive procedure, if you recover rubbish there's no physical damage.

The OP might mean a pause and restart after a reboot or after some time, when the logic becomes more strained. Perhaps the possibility that a pause could last several days would make a pause function undesirable.

The deleted file was a 2kb text file, so it used one cluster external to the MFT. When it was recovered it contained the same text. I assume (as we all do) that the info about this file, name, size, cluster number was collected by Recuva at scan time and stored in memory. Although the MFT record was subsequently overwritten, the cluster's lcn in memory (from the first scan) was used to retrieve the data - which hadn't been overwritten.

What's more interesting is that if you scan a cd with pics on it, look at them in Thumbnails mode, and then take the cd out of the drive, you can still recover the pics. I don't know if there's a size limits, I've recovered pics up to 650 kb. Other types of file have mixed results. I don't know why anyone would want to do this, but it amuses the geek in me.

On the other hand, if we put para 1 and 2 together, perhaps the text file in para 1 was retrieved from memory and not the disk. I suppose I should do another test this time watching the data cluster with WinHex or something.

I just installed Recuva in my PC. When a try to run the software a window of Recuva opens and in a second it closes again!. I cannot see if there's some message error or something that infoms me about the problem. I have PC with an AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 2.01 GHz, 1GB of RAM, with a Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP3 (32 bits).

I tried to be very careful in every step. I am sure I did exactly what it was necessary but there's another problem. I consider myself an expert user but bow I am astonished ....this is not the first time I've got troubles with a new app but it is the first of this kind....

hi, I am having the same problem on a Pentium Intel M Laptop by Dell running windows xp sp3 32bit. I downloaded from file hippo. Install went through without a hitch. When I launch the program, a wizard appears and then disappears within seconds. I saw the process start in windows process viewere in task manager, but it instantly goes away. The program runs for literally 1 second then closes itself. I ran the software useing the /debug parameter and came out with this log file:

I have also tried cleaning out the system using other spyware / a/v suites such as avg, spybot s&d. After performing these tasks, uninstalling & reinstalling recuva, still no go on launching of recuva.

I started a recovery on a damaged disc with pictures from one of my biggest swim meets, and Recuva is saying it found all the 956 pictures, however, it says 2 files found (954 ignored). I'm wondering how to get it to NOT ignore the files, because those are the absolute priceless ones. Please, any help will be so much appreciated.....

Go to Options/Actions and tick the top three boxes (you don't even have to scan again). The bad news is that if this shows your ignored files it's because they're zero bytes in length, and so unrecoverable.

I always assume people are running in Advanced Mode. Are you running in Advanced Mode or using the Wizard? If wizarding, press the top r/h Switch to Advanced Mode box, and then clear anything that's in the Filename or Path box.

Add me to your happy camper list, Augeas & Kainoa. I just got back from Colorado photograping Wild Mustangs. I've waited 6 months to do this and spent $$$ getting there. I don't take my CF card out of my camera because the pins in the camera were damaged and fixed and I am afraid to pull the CF card out so I download after each shoot. I spent all night trying to recover a reformatted card that had the horses on it. I was devestated. After more hours, I finally decided to pull the CF card out and take my chances. Still no picters. Then I came across this thread and thanks to all of the above and the recuva program I have my Wild Mustang Pictures! Thanks again!

Hi. Having the same prob. Recuva is ignoring files and not allowing me access. EaseUs on the other hand has also found the files and will allow recovery but as they are large files the free program won't allow more than 2gb. I have recuva pro so don't want to also have EaseUs pro. Need to recover these files.

You misunderstand portable, to my knowledge, is not permanently canceled, this version doesn't have a portable because (at my guess only) because the only thing added is telemetry to see how people use it
