Ileft it on sleep mode last night, once i opened it up today it was turned off. I figured it lost battery which usually doesnt happen, but I turned it on and it shows a blinking screen that comes on and then turns black, over and over. the blinking screen shows "press esc key for startup menu".
Try to turn on the computer you start to press F11 repeatedly till the menu opens. You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook. The document also gives you information on what to do if Windows does not start normally.
When I do a power on, it is stuck for a long time at the HP logo screen, saying "Press the ESC key for Startup Menu". If i press esc (or any other F-key) nothing happens for a long time. After a while (like 10 minutes) one menu option is written (I think it is "Press F1 for system information"). Then after a while more (like 5 more mintues) the startup menu finally appears. Then it responds quickly (inside the menu system) and i can do some tests.
I have tried to look at the blinking of the "Caps lock" LED. It does not blink until after a long time. I didn't see exactly when it started (I couldn't sit there for 10 minutes waiting for a key to maybe blink), but when I started counting it blinked at least 10 times, so it does not match any of the blink codes.
(I docked the HDD into a USB dock, and run som disk checks. Some errors were corrected, but it seemed to be OK also before that. After all of the actions above, I reinstalled the HDD in the notebook, put in a Windows 7 recovery DVD, and restarted. It didn't care. It still "hangs" att boot logo).
2. When I start the notebook without HD in, but with a bootable USB key, or a bootable CD, it still takes 5-10 minutes before the boot screen reacts to the ESC button. Shouldn't the laptop boot quickly if the faulty HD is not there?
After 20 failing attempts over a period of two weeks, to also perform a complete Windows 7 system image, the computer finally had a good day and I was also able to perform the system backup to the external HDD.
I bought a new HDD and replaced the dying one inside. The computer bios responded quickly when the new HDD was in place, which was a good sign. I performed a system restore from the backup on the external HDD, let it run by itself for an hour or two, and then everything was up and running again.
The diagnostics will test the hardware -- compare to you walking around your vehicle, looking for flat tires, removing children's tricycles and toboggans from being near the wheels, and cleaning ice/snow from the glass. These are "hardware" tests -- they just prove that the vehicle, or the disk-drive, responds to commands. The tests say nothing about having a dead battery, a frozen engine-block, or losing the ignition key, or a dead fuel-injection pump, or having an empty gas tank. Even if all these parts are "good", the vehicle may not start. To start Windows, you need a disk-drive that passes the hardware tests *AND* also that the files on the disk-drive are complete and readable, so that the "boot" into Windows will be successful.
I read here at this thread that holding Shift during boot can bring up the GRUB menu. However I try holding one or the other Shift keys, tapping, tapping then holding, nothing works. Am I missing something? How does one access the GRUB menu during boot time?
But the other people who answered in here are right aswell, but I think for a different problem. If the Grub menu does not start automatically on start up, you can try fiddeling with your /etc/default/grub file.
The first two problems can be bypassed by using capslock instead of shift. The trick is to press caps lock during boot and watch the capslock light. When it goes out, hit capslock again to turn it back on, and keep doing that until either you get the grub menu or you realize you've missed the timing again.
If you have a system with timing issues or video card initialization issues with grub, I strongly recommend you use one of the other answers here to permanently disable the hidden menu feature and/or force text console mode, as appropriate. You will need to either boot successfully to do this -- either normally, via rescue options in the grub menu, or by booting the Ubuntu install media and invoking rescue mode from there.
When I'm installing ubuntu on a machine that has known problems like this, I'll use the "try ubuntu before installing" option and before it finishes, edit /etc/default/grub to disable hidden menu. This can be done during install or before rebooting at the end. Make sure update-grub gets rerun after you make that edit, either as part of the install or manually.
My Start Menu keeps popping up randomly. This is very annoying while playing competitive games, because the game automatically exits. I am not pressing the Windows key (or any other key) when this happens. I have even blocked the Windows key (there is a button on my keyboard blocking the Windows button)so I really don't understand why this keeps happening.
I am currently running Windows 10, but I had the same problem on Windows 8.1. The problem occurred (or appeared)after I uninstalled a program called StartIsBack, which gives you a Start Menu on Windows 8.1.
I have a new ASUS gaming computer and the same thing has happened. I finally found a solution on a thread. I removed my ASUS screen saver and it stop popping up on it's own. So for you ASUS users that may have this issue try it!
I have a Lenovo yoga 3 and I had the exact problem start happen randomly--and very frequently (the windows 10 start menu kept popping open every few seconds even though I wasn't pressing any buttons intentionally. I still suspect some hardware issue with touchscreen or trackpad, but I went to the mouse settings in control panel, and then to the device settings for my Synaptics ClickPad V4.0 on RMIHID Port.On the multi-touch tab, on the three finger subtab, I disabled tapping (which was set to trigger Cortana) and the problem stopped long enough for me to type this message without interruption! -support/11832-help-stop-windows-10-search-box-constantly-popping-up.htmlA post on on this page is what gave me the idea.Honestly I think I might just be touching the trackpad with my palms too much, so it could be user error or design that needs improvement.
Often, a program starts automatically because of a shortcut in the Startup folder in the Start menu. The program may also run automatically from a registry entry. To remove programs from automatic startup, follow these instructions in order. After completing each set of steps, reboot your device to see if the problem is fixed. If necessary, you can then continue to the next set of instructions.
Some startup items have no shortcut in the Startup folder. You can disable these with either the Startup apps/tasks tool in Settings or the Task Manager. Otherwise, they are only accessible through the registry. If you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with registry editing, use these utilities.
anybody else have a 1 second delay from the watch face to a menu [ e.g the first press of the start button for activities or going from watch to widgets ] , this is with a garmin standard watch face not a downloaded one , after the initial first button everything else is snappy fast but when i press it for the first time its a 1 second delay , its bugging me , also this is version 20.00
Yeah I've just got 20.03 today it's the same on that as well I installed it hoping it might change but clearly not haha , it's such a small issue but just annoying that it's not snappy on the first button , I'm trying to raise awareness about it , I'd love for this to be sorted , I've only recently had the watch it updated straight to 20.00 , but was version 19.20 any better with speed wise ?
Could be processing speed has been reduced..(to reduce battery drain I guess?) . I good way to measure is to use a benchmark program in the IQ store, before and after a new software version.... Trouble for me when it's reduced some intensive power apps run slower, especially games etc which can be annoying along with the watchface screen change speed... as well as other small speed issues...
I'm still running 19.20.....what was the software version before that please? ... I'd like to revert to it for my now always 00 annerobic score to be back to normal... and there's no speed issue with 19.20... or before that....
Ps.. If a standard built-in watchface is taking longer than usual to flick to an app or widget.... then how long will an IQ watchface take then... even longer than usual perhaps?... I guess it depends on how many people are affected by the issue, a wide spread issue? ... I guess I'll monitor the forum like everyone else lol.
During POST there should be a message on what key to press to access RBSU. if the USB keyboard is unresponsive maybe someone disabled USB. You can set switch 6 of the 12 position switch to 'on' to clear all the NVRAM settings and put the sytsem back to default. Download the maintenance and service guide for more information
I do get a message to press a key to get the setup or boot menus, when I press the key (F11), the screen responds by aletering the background on the F11 prompt (so I know the keyboard and USB is working), but the boot menu doesn't appear.
My first problem was caused by a VGA to HDMI adapter. I had this server connected to an HDMI display, and for some reason, although the initial bios screens displayed normally on this display, the setup and boot menus did not display.
The boot menu is a special menu that allows you to choose the device or operating system you want to start up your computer with. It's like a gateway that gives you control over what gets loaded when you turn on your computer.
