More large format printing

I have been sending my layout files as .pdf to a local printing shop
and am not pleased with the results- pixels are visible. I select 300
dpi resolution (the highest) when I export to .pdf. It seems like
11x17 is small enough to where I could get decent print quality. Any
sugestions?
