Template Changes Not Saving

Hi. I am trying to learn the new Layout feature, but I am having
difficulty. I have read some of the help files and posts that I have
seen here but am unable to find a solution to my problem. I opened
Layout and chose a blank template to start with. I need to create a
24x36 template, so I changed the paper size in File - Document Setup,
and I changed the Page Setup (under File - Page Setup). In this Page
Setup box, I clicked on Printer so that I could change it to our large
plotter (rather than the default printer). Here I also changed the
page size, etc. Once I made all of these changes, I went to File -
Save as Template. I gave it a name and saved it to the default
template location. But when I start a new layout using that template,
none of the changes that I made to it (the page size, printer
settings, etc.) are there. The settings are the original settings of
the original template I started with. Can someone please tell me what
am I doing wrong? I know I must be missing something....I just can't
see it.

Jodi,

I started to create a custom template but only modifying things (like
paper size, resolution, colours) only in the Document setup. Then
saved as a template but not in the default template folder but in "My
templates".
I could retrieve it with no problem - and all the settings were there.

p.s. It's a different thing that maybe the printer settings may not
work . I only have a pdf printer here, at home.
