I just got it!
If you use some of the "Default styles" or "Sketchy edges" or
"Straight lines" stly, you can set the background transparent. Try to
play around in LayOut itself, under the "Sketchup model" tab of your
tray and pick the styles tab again, there, with the dropdown menu it
shows your model with background and without background.
In SU, you can start from one of the styles you like and try to "mix"
it with other settings so you'll have a "set of settings" which you
can even save as a template just for LayOut use.
Good news to me, too, because I do much archaeological drawing (on
gridded A3 size paper) and this way I may be able to combine hand
drawing with SU models on the same layout!
