I only ever schedule cantors with the rest of my liturgical ministers. We also schedule the choirs at the same time. This is mostly because many of my cantors are also Eucharistic Ministers and I can't schedule them for the same weekend. You could probably leave those spots vacant (when you do run your automated scheduler, just ask it to schedule only the ministries that you want to schedule) and then he could manually assign his cantors later.
