Hello all,

Quick question for those involved with hospitality ministries.

Do volunteers at your church wear nametags on Sundays—either personalized with their own names, or more general badges that say “Usher” or “Greeter”, etc.?

When I'm in a new church, I appreciate how nametags make it easier to spot someone to ask a question or make a personal connection. My own parish is considering introducing this for Greeters and Ushers. Although I’m drawn to personalized nametags, I’m also curious whether parishes using shared “Usher” or “Greeter” badges find those easier to manage over time.

If you’re willing to share:
  • Which volunteers wear nametags or badges at your church?
  • How do you keep them organized?
  • Any pros or cons you’ve noticed between personalized nametags and role-based badges?
Thanks in advance for sharing what’s worked in your community—I always appreciate learning from you and sharing with others!

Peace,
Krista

Hello, Krista.  Happy new year.

Yes, our ushers/greeters (one and the same) wear name tags.  They are personalized to the usher as we have the same group of ushers taking turns.  We just have a container in the back of church where the name tags are kept.  That's assuming he/she remembers to take it off before they leave church.

We just have generic ones, and they've worked well enough. They're over-the-neck lanyards with a double-sided metal badge. Simple, but effective.

While I appreciate the personal touch that individual badges would have, we aren't keen on making extra work for anybody to keep them updated.

We do have individual name tags for Communion Ministers to help highlight that they are a smaller, more specific, commissioned ministry in our diocese. Those tags are simpler paper inserts in plastic name tag badges (also on a lanyard). They're nice enough, and easy to keep up-to-date with.

We have all ushers in local store purchased personalized name badges.  Sometimes our ushers act as greeters if they have the right kind of personality – otherwise there are not official greeters.  The name badges say Usher.  Yes, I agree it is really nice to see names on ushers and greeters.  The individual will take the name badges home with them and wear them when they have the assignment.  Yes, sometimes they forget, but it is an honor to be an usher and all have a tendency to wear their name badge.  We keep them updated by “every so often” ordering new badges.  When the need seems to arise.

Every October the entire parish wears a nametag every week of the month.  You would wear the badge of your ministry or simply make your own paper name tag at the church entrance.  We get to know each other better in our large parish.

Hello.

We use a magnetic type of name tag for our Hospitality Ministers (same as ushers/greeters) which measure about 1”x3”.  We personalize each tag with the name of the minister and “Hospitality” below their name.  We have found the magnetic type to be more user friendly and do not damage clothing.   The name tags are kept in a transparent 4-drawer stackable storage container, and the drawers are labeled, e.g. – A-H; I – L, etc.  They are stored in our Hospitality Room next to the ministry schedule for each Mass that liturgical ministers are asked to sign in when arriving at church.
