For the record:

The 10-year renewal for our Project's original logo as a legally registered stylized Service Mark was approved. But the renewal of the Service Mark for the plain-text single word term "USGENWEB" was canceled by USPTO. As the new owner of the service mark, I was notified by USPTO of their decision to cancel our renewal on Dec. 28, 2021.

Upon research, it appears that USPTO sent a notification on Jun 24, 2021, to the previous owner informing us that the specimen submitted showing the word USGENWEB "in use" was unsatisfactory. The June notice provided a 6-month window to submit a different specimen. Unfortunately, the June notice was never received, a new specimen was not submitted, and the renewal was canceled. 

After considerable research the Advisory Board identified an option to submit a "Petition to Director" by Feb 28, 2022, to request reconsideration of the decision due to non-receipt of the June notification. I filled out this document to the best of my ability, attached a new specimen, and submitted the form on Feb. 26, 2022, with the required non-refundable fee of $250. The fee was paid for by donations from Advisory Board members. 

Per USPTO, the next steps are to actively monitor the account for status updates, the Director's decision, and/or any further requested submissions. The USPTO receipt advised that a decision could take 4+ months.
