1. SBA Centennial Speaker Series: Hon. Roberta Achtenberg, Commissioner, U.S. Commission on Civil Rights

Please join the Student Bar Association, Pride Law, American Constitution Society, USF Law Democrats, the Equal Justice Society and Law Students for Reproductive Justice onWednesday, April 10th (12:00 pm; Kendrick 102) for the final Centennial Speaker - Roberta Achtenberg, Commissioner, U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Commissioner Achtenberg's lecture is entitled "It's Always Harder Than You Think: The Law, Social Change and the Benefit of Being Naïve."

President Obama appointed Roberta Achtenberg to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in 2011. Prior to joining the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Commissioner Achtenberg served in the Clinton Administration—first as Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity and later as Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She was the first openly lesbian or gay public official whose federal appointment was confirmed by the United States Senate. Roberta Achtenberg served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 1990 - 1993 and prior to becoming a public official worked as a civil rights attorney and activist, founding the National Center for Lesbian Rights in 1977. Commissioner Achtenberg is a graduate of UC Berkeley and the University of Utah College of Law. 

2. Centennial Challenge Service Saturday: Our final Service Weekend of the year will be this Saturday and Sunday and the Community Service Committee has coordinated several great service opportunities:
1. Serving Dinner at Episcopal Community Services Homeless Shelter (1001 Polk St.) from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm [Saturday, April 13th]
2. Habitat Restoration at Candlestick Point State Park to celebrate Earth Day from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm [Saturday, April 13th]
3. Volunteering for Sunday Streets (Community Celebration in the Mission) from 10:00 am -1:30 pm [Sunday, April 14th]
4. Urban Farming at Hayes Valley Urban Farm from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm [Sunday, April 14th]

3. SBA Student Group Awards: Applications to nominate a student group for an award will be made available tomorrow in the SBA Office. If you would like to nominate a student group or one of their events for an award, please complete the form and return it to the SBA Office no later than Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 5:00 pm. Winners will be announced at the Spring BBQ on Friday, April 19th. Applications may also be e-mailed to s...@usfca.edu. For additional information about Student Group Awards, please contact Student Organizations Coordinator, Patrick Grochmal.

5. BLA Panel: Careers in Business Law

Are you thinking about pursuing a career in business law? Come join the Business Law Association for our second panel to hear business attorneys discuss what they do in their practices, the different paths which led them to where they are today, and advice for students interesting in pursuing a career in business law. Or, just swing by for some free food! The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session and informal networking reception at a venue TBD.Here's a preview of our panelists:

2 partners of a San Francisco firm focused on startups, entertainment/media law and IP

Insurance attorney and former litigator, who manages claims for an insurance 'club,' focusing on claims resolution and litigation strategy and management with an emphasis on maritime law

Attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) who specializes in corporate governance and the regulation of financial institutions

6. Careers in International Human Rights

The International Law Society will be hosting a panel on Careers as a Human Rights Defender on April 11th, from 5:30-6:30 in Room 104. This event is the second in a series of Career Panels presented by ILS. The goal of the Career Panel series is to expose students to organizations that work on various issues in international law, in which one could apply a law degree in a traditional or non-traditional way. The panelists will be:
