Yes: move into a dorm. Or come to a public computing lab. But unless
your machine is in the domain usf.edu, you will not be able to use
news.usf.edu.

and hot sand to me, I thought: Maybe I've just got the synaesthesia flu.

You could telnet to you USF host (if it isn't blocked by a firewall) and use
a server based newsreader (pine, rn, tin, etc.).
I'm getting 50-52K connects on USF modems. What speeds do you get with your
other ISP?
Times Warner is cutting a deal to USF students for cable modem access which is
much faster than 56K...$30 a month (plus installation, ~$50) provided you
already carry their cable service...and they provide compete access to the USF
network. Service is available in most areas and is expanding rapidly.
Dave
Glenn,
Is the same deal available to USF faculty?

Contact Time Warner for details...they chose to persue this without
coordination or notification with anyone I know at USF. I got spammed by them
and saw an article in the the Oracle.

Interesting...
when I called they said okay. Give us your name and account and we'll switch
you over. Couldn't have been easier.

Ok, so they now I switched over. Now, tell me, how can I access
news.usf.edu from RR? The news server does not recognize IP's from RR. I
have high speed access to the Internet, but cant get my newsgroups! Could
USF please allow students with RR IP's into news.usf.edu?

At this time I'm told that usf.news.edu will *not* be opened up...if it were,
all TW-RR customers would have access to news via our server (which would
probably kill it).
In the mean time, you *can* access usf.news.edu via your brill account using
pine, tin, rn or whatever is available on brill (I think I posted this
solution here before).

I think NNTP user id and password needs to be set up, so that not only
Time Warner customers but any one with a valid USF account can access it.
