Nope. Been having various problems myself and we are having some
conversation about it in usf.dialup where I have crossposted this
reply. Join in and report carefully so that we contribute to solving
the problem.

Okely dokely, here's some more information:
The problems have been occurring both when dialling in via Trumpet Winsock
(attempting PPP connection) and via my DOS terminal emulation program
(VT100, and I, too, can vouch for the fact that zmodem uploads ain't
working, but downloads are.) System: 386/33, 14.4kb modem, standard phone
line within 2.5 miles of the old USF telephone hub (I don't know hwere
these new lines come into campus, so I have no feel for
long-distance-telephone-line-noise, ummmm ... that's all I can think of as
relevant right now. Questions? ask away, I'll answer as best I can.
You can read the rest of my post to usf.misc quoted in Kirt's message - I
won't waste bandwidth by quoting it again.

I've had several reports of connection problems (garbage, disconnects after a
few minutes, missing characters, etc.) from people with 14.4 modems.
Early on (just after the new modems were installed) we found that some of the
14.4 connection problems were caused by the new modems not accepting a 19.2
connections using V.32tervo (a short lived, never standardized method of
increasing the connection speeds from 14.4 to 19.2). The tervo negotiation
was turn off on the modem pools and successful connections were reported from
some to those with the 14.4 tervo modems.
On one 14.4 (in an old Parkard Bell) did not reset to the same factory
settings as the majority of other modems. An initialization string had to be
used to set it up properly.
Two modems were found to be malfunctioning on the new modems pools yesterday.
They have been busied out. Hopefully this will help some. Further testing of
the modems will be necessary and we working on testing procedure that will
(hopefully) lessen the impact of those using the modems during the tests
(which basically means that we don't want to just kill the active connections
to run the tests).
It would be helpful to me if you could post the brand/model/speed modem that
you have and the time of day when you experience problems.
You might also want to check my dialup web page (www.acomp.usf.edu/~dialup)
for the link to the Dialup Statistics which will show the usage trends on the
modem pools.
Please continue to post information about dialup problems (I monitor
usf.dialup on a regular basis).

Modem: Intel 144/144i faxmodem, P/N PCFM7500
Time O' Day: Most prevalent mid-morning (8:30-10:00a) and late evening
(10:00-12:30a), usually no problem early evening, late night, but I've
never tried between about 10:00a and 6:30p. Oh, I've yet to be able to
log on via modem before 8:00a, and to quote Bart Simpson, "You mean they
actually have a 5:30 in the morning now?", meaning I usually wake up late,
so my sample number for this is lower than even the majority of
Biochemists would be comfortable with.
Paul.
Could be a timing factor in the Login script...never tested it on a machine
that slow.

Are you resetting your modem to factory settings (AT&F) before dialing?
Are you using Trumpet Winsock? If so, are you using Manual Dial or PAP?

I don't know whether you've done anything in the last few days to
correct/change/modify anything, but I've been able to log in on my first
attempt several times since my last post. *shrug* then again, maybe it
was gremlins, and now that they know that I'm onto 'em they've ceased
using this particular tactic to annoy me *8)
