Back in the old days when all this was apple orchards (actually, I think
this place was once a military airport, but that's another story ...)
"rlogin" was aliased to a simple "r". Since that would make things
easier for those of us still using archaic yet basically fast means of
connecting to the USF servers, I can understand why the powers that be
wouldn't want this convenience available, but I thought I'd plead our case
anyway. Powers-that-be? Bueller? Anyone? Hows about aliasing rlogin to
a simple "r" on the dialup links?

Muchos Garcias in advance,
Paul.

Hm, I don't remember "r" being a valid command at the CLI (term server, access
server) prompt...still have one old 28.8 terminal server setup and it doesn't
work there either. "rl" was and still is a valid abbreviation of the rlogin
command.

However, will inform you early that your current method of entering
"pjantzen@med" for dial-up access will have to be replaced in the near future
with the fully qualified E-mail address (pjan...@com1.med.usf.edu) at the
first dial-up login prompt...this has been documented for over a year and
strict enforcement of the convention is now necessary. We avoided strict
enforcement (tried to make things easier on everyone), but the addition of so
many new servers and domains has created some lookup problems on this end.
Of course, I guess we could go back to growing apples.....

Many thanks for the insight, but I'm absolutely positive that "r" used to
work - I have a screen-print of a telnet screen showing "r" used in place
of "rlogin", but hey, it ain't like it's _that_ big of a deal, considering
the following:

*sigh*

Like I've always said, if life gives you Apples, make boat anchors.
