Since the new modem bank went online, I have seen that connection speeds
are supposed to be up to 33.6. I have yet to make such a connection,
either via my computer or my dad's. My modem is a plug and play 33.6 (I
can't really find any other information about it) and I continually
connect at 26400, as I did before the change to the new number, though I
*occasinally* am able to get a 28800. Same exact story on my dad's. He
has a U.S. Robotics 33.6 Sportster fax/data modem. I don't use my modem
to connect to anything but USF so I would think that the factory settings
haven't been manipulated. Is everyone else, who is capable of connecting
at 33.6, making those kinds of connections?
Also, with regard to a few recent posts, I have also experienced modems on
the new number, that after I dial, it sounds like they pick up, and
immediately disconnect. Or sometimes continually ring. Or sometimes
answer with garbage being displayed at the login prompt, with keyboard
input on my end not being allowed. So I have also experienced all the
mentioned little bugs. You all are NOT the only ones. But, in fairness,
for the most part, I am able to get connected most of the time on the
first try. Just not at 33.6. :(

One of my external modems (Microcom Deskport FAST 33.6) has a LCD
display on the front that shows the actual transmission speed...it's neat to
watch it increase and decrease over the course of my connection. It usually
stabalizes at 31.2. On the old modem pools it usually ran at 26.4.
The faster your modem the less likely you will see maximum speeds. Line noise
is a major factor. Too many telephone devices (phones, answering machines,
caller ID boxes, etc) plugged into a single residentual phone circuit can also
degrade the signal to your modem and reduce connection speeds. I had an old
phone cord once that would carry a phone signal just fine, but would not
carry a data signal.
