Has anyone else noticed that the Japanese Beetle population seems a
bit less this year?

Much less in my yard. Bee population way down, too.

I've only saw one beetle go buzzing by. So far (knock on wood), I
haven't seen a single one on any of my flowers, tree, or veggies.

Well, obviously I was due for a come-uppance (how on earth is that
spelled, anyway? is it even in the dictionary?). Every since I put
that question up for the group, the beetles have been coming fast and
furiously. (You may have seen my post on the Useful Gardens blog -
www.usefulgardens.blogspot.com - entitled "Organic Gardening Turned Me
Into A Ruthless Killer".) Suddenly we had a real burst of beetles. I
have activated the Japanese Beetle Trap / Automatic Chicken Feeder
with good results. Have I mentioned this marvelous invention? I'm
very proud of this invention - although I'm still convinced that I
heard about it somewhere, even though I never could find another one
except my own.

Notice, if you have them, that the real passion of Jap Beetles is for
the Rosaceae family of plants: roses, apples, pears.... all of those
are being munched in my garden. That and any of the really large
flowering hibiscus plants. Oh, they love 'em.

Organic note: So far not one deterrent has worked. Neem, no.
Surround, no. Cinnamite, no. DE, no. I'm down to pick-and-squash,
pick-and-squash and that only works on those I can reach. So far the
zinnias have been saved. Which is good, because if the zinnias didn't
survive the beetles, the powdery mildew would have no favorite hosts
come August.

Ha!

I live in Roanoke, Va, and I have not seen any Japanese Beetles. What
causes a shift in their populations?

Thank you for all of the information. As a side note, when I was
little I remember going out in the yard with an old coffee can with
about an inch of gasoline in it. We would knock the beetles into the
can and of coarse once they hit the gasoline they were gone. It was
effective, but not friendly. It did have a terrible odor since we
hardly ever emptied it. That was dad's job.
