What's eating the raised bed wood?

About 3 weeks ago I made 2 raised gardens in separate areas of my
yard. As I was putting in a couple of small posts and chicken wire in
the back (for peas & beans) I noticed what looked like baby termites
and small "tunnels" in the interior side of the wood. (I used non-
treated wood as recommended). Can you suggest a way to get rid of
these pests before I plant this weekend. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated. This is only my second year of gardening in Virginia.
Thank you in advance for any help with my situation. R/Noralee

Hi, Noralee! I'm so sorry - I just found your email amid some others
that got sent to the wrong folder.
I hope you went ahead and planted your gardens!

I'm betting the offending pests were wood beetle larvae and, yes, they
are starting to munch on your planting beds. Wow. That's fast. I don't
think I'd do much with them, brush them off or hose them off and go
ahead. They won't hurt you and likely won't hurt your plants. Those
critters that eat dead things (like old wood) are not the ones that
eat your plants while living. But keep an eye on them - if you find
winged adults that are not ants, I'd check it out.

Meanwhile, I've posted your email on the Useful Gardens discussion
group page (http://groups.google.com/group/usefulgardens) so you can
click on the link to go there to see what other suggestions other
gardeners might have for you!

Keep us posted on how the garden does!
