Happy Friday everyone!
Please read entire email, even if NOT going to SBMUN. You need to respond to this email as well.

EVERYONE-- RE: Backing out of conferences
Hi Everyone,
This is my least favorite topic to have to make you read in an email....
For SBMUN, we had a limited number of delegate assignments that filled very, very quickly. We had many members of the club who were unable to attend a conference this semester, who really wanted to go to SBMUN. Dr. M made it very clear how important it was when you "commit" to a seat. Conferences are very expensive, and as a team, we are one of the few schools that don't have our students pay to compete. That being said, when we had a group of students back out of SBMUN last second it was 1) very unprofessional and disrespectful to give a 48 hour notice when we've known the dates for this competition since August, 2) not fair to your clubmates who were unable to attend but could have attended 3) Makes our team look bad when we send people who have only had a day or two to research their topic -- Even if they are amazing delegates, its just not fair to them.
I don't want to have this conversation again. We give conference dates in advance so people can check their calendars. I know schoolwork piles up, but I'm proud to say we have a very intelligent and involved team, and that means the standard for backing out of a conference is very, very high since so many MUN'ers have crazy schedules and academic commitments.
Emergencies do happen, which are totally excusable. All delegates have constant access to myself and Dr. M, we have given our phone numbers, emails, and the facebook group.Anyone who did back out however, will need to attend the 11/13 UCSD training and or help extensively with the planning for the Spring conference.
So let's put this behind us, wish our fantastic group heading to SB in the rain the best of luck, and remember that our club operates under these rules to help prepare delegates for bigger conferences like NY and DC.
EVERYONE--- INFO ABOUT 11/13 TRAINING
Hey Sophia,
Thanks for the response. That's great to hear that people are interested. Here are some of my ideas for the event so far:
Goal: Provide a space for people who have never attended any MUN conference (or even training) to see how MUN conferences operate in a friendly, non-competitive environment with little or no commitment (besides showing up for the event). To achieve this, I want to have the formal presentation of MUN (the dias, resolutions, motions, etc.) but, I want to remove the role-play requirement of presenting the ideas of the country you are assigned to. Thus, the topic must be approchable for people who may not already be involved with and cognizant of international affairs (in my view, this will give the feel of MUN without the prerequisite commitment to research, and should increase the number of people attending).
Topic: Tentatively, we were thinking about splitting the day into two. The first half, from 9 to 12, would be looking into the role of corporations in development (what is acceptable, should there be limits, is it beneficial, etc.). The second half, we were thinking about a topic where a corporation takes over a state. The professed goals are humane and development oriented, but democracy is removed (for example, look at this TED talk on charter cities
http://www.ted.com/talks/paul_romer.html).
Format: We want to give country assignments to people, but have other countries available for people who do not RSVP. I do not expect people to research these topics from the viewpoint of their assigned countries. Instead, I want them to debate the issue from their own viewpoint (or if they have done research, they can debate from their country's viewpoint).
Preparation: I want to create a one-page, double-sided handout for each of the delegates. On one side, a topic synopsis. On the other, an introduction to MUN with explanations of caucusing, resolutions, and simplified rules of debate (with example motions). If we have two different topics, then I want to create another handout so each topic will get a full-page introduction.
Staffing: I want to have a full dias, including vice-chair and moderator. We can have two groups, one for the morning and one for afternoon. I will have experienced club members at the event to act as guides for people who have questions or would like help with what is going on.
I am more than welcoming for any help you all want to provide, but I'm not really sure what kind of role you would be interested in. At this point, it's just a grad student and myself putting this thing together :D If you all want to help with the topic, dias, experienced guides, or whatever, please let me know.
Here's the responding part I told you about. If are relatively new to MUN, want to know what it is like to chair, or are going to be involved in the spring conference, you should attend. Its 10 mins away and not an all day thing. Email me back so I can get a number, so far I have 7 people. Let's show UCSD how awesome our team is!
