Universal Scene Description (USD), is a system that scalably encodes and interchanges static and time-sampled 3D geometry, shading and lighting data between Digital Content Creation applications. Domain-specific schema modules define the geometry, shading, and lighting encoding atop USD's domain-agnostic core. It provides a low-level data model that supports plugin implementations, and a scenegraph built on top of a multi-threaded "composition engine" for creating complex scenes out of reusable, modular assets. USD also includes features that support collaboration between multiple artists working in content creation pipelines, and comes with a suite of tools - including a high-performance renderer, Hydra, which can simultaneously consume data from multiple sources (and ships with a "front end" that reads from a UsdStage), and render to multiple "back ends" (and ships with a modern OpenGL backend for interacting with USD scenes at many points in a pipeline, as well as a Pixar RenderMan back end that can be built if you have RenderMan installed).

Pixar Animation Studios uses USD internally on all of its active and future productions. It was released to the open-source community in summer 2016. You can find more information here:
