| The Judge Hollinger Alternative Dispute Resolution Program will prepare students for the field of arbitration and mediation The USC Gould School of Law has received a $5 million gift to launch the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Program preparing students in arbitration and mediation, an emerging area of law. The gift — the third largest in the law school’s history — was made by Judith O. Hollinger ’61, a retired Los Angeles Superior Court and | Beverly Hills Municipal Court judge. Known as the Judge Judith O. Hollinger Alternative Dispute Resolution Program, the program is one of the few of its kind in the nation. "I am proud to play a role in helping to educate the next generation of lawyers in the important field of alternative dispute resolution,” Hollinger said. “Students will learn how to settle a variety of matters out of court ranging from personal injury, construction and even criminal cases. The main point is to resolve cases through settlement and not clog the court system.” Read More |
(b) New species discovered beneath the ocean 南加大科學家發現海洋新微生物 
| Microbes may play an important role in the world’s carbon cycle Two miles below the surface of the ocean, researchers have discovered new microbes that “breathe” sulfate. The microbes, which have yet to be classified and named, exist in massive undersea aquifers — networks of channels in porous rock beneath the ocean where water continually churns. About one-third of the Earth’s biomass is thought to exist in this largely uncharted | environment. It was surprising to find new bugs, but when we go to warmer, relatively old and isolated fluids, we find a unique microbial community,” said Alberto Robador, postdoctoral researcher at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and lead author of a paper on the new findings published by the open-access journal Frontiers in Microbiology. Sulfate is a compound of sulfur and oxygen that occurs naturally in seawater. It is used commercially in everything from car batteries to bath salts and can be aerosolized by the burning of fossil fuels, increasing the acidity of the atmosphere. Read More |
(c) Campaign for USC crosses $4 billion milestone 南加大募款計畫已獲40億美金支持 
| Fundraising effort supports academic excellence; goal is $6 billion The Campaign for the University of Southern California — the university’s ambitious $6 billion fundraising effort — has passed a key milestone, crossing the $4 billion mark. “Among all colleges and universities in our nation, only Harvard, Cornell, Stanford, Penn and Columbia have accomplished this,” USC President C. | L. Max Nikias wrote in a letter on Jan. 27, “and what is even more remarkable: We achieved this landmark in just 4½ years. “I share this news with great pride and gratitude, as it represents the collective efforts and dedication of the entire Trojan Family, with gifts coming from every corner of the world, and every constituent group in our community,” Nikias said. Nikias specifically noted the generosity of the USC trustees, along with the university’s parents and alumni. He noted: • Trustees have given a combined $1.12 billion to the campaign. • 60 percent of the total amount raised has come from non-alumni. • USC Athletics has raised nearly $280 million during the campaign, its most successful fundraising ever. PORTRAIT OF BRAINS Shih-Ting Hung is an award winning film director with a strong eye for art direction. Born and raised on a fishing island Pescadores off the coast of Taiwan, Hung has painted and drawn since the age of four, dreaming of an Utopia where skies break in half. She left her hometown as a young painter to learn how to make films at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, USA. Hung’s first film VIOLA: the Traveling Rooms of a Little Giant (2008) was recognized with a Student Academy Award and subsequently projected as part of digital showcase in New York’s Guggenheim Museum. Since then she has made projects all over the world. Hung’s multi-cultural experiences and a life split between Asia, Europe, and USA gives her an intercultural perspective from which to tell stories with a unique eye. Hung is now signed as a director with Ridely Scott Associates Asia. |
