USC Faculty Selected as Academician of Academia Sinica, Taiwan 恭喜南加大醫學院歐靜雄教授獲選為中研院院士   （中央社記者曹宇帆洛杉磯7日專電）中華民國最高學術機構中央研究院第32次院士會議，在7日選舉20位第31屆新科院士，以及2位2016年名譽院士。南加州共有4位學者獲選院士，1位獲選名譽院士。   根據駐洛杉磯台北經濟文化辦事處科技組發布的新聞稿，南加州獲選新院士的學者包括，數理科學組加州大學聖地牙哥分校（UCSD）數學系暨電算系教授金芳蓉（Fan Chung）。 工程科學組加州大學洛杉磯分校（UCLA）電機工程系雷神講座教授王康隆（Kang-Lung Wang），加州理工學院（Caltech）醫學工程系系主任暨電機機械及醫學工程系教授戴聿昌（Yu-Chong Tai）。   以及生命科學組南加州大學（USC）醫學院分子微生物暨免疫學系教授歐競雄（Jing-Hsiung James Ou）。   此外，2014年諾貝爾物理學獎得主暨加州大學聖巴巴拉分校（UCSB）教授中村修二（Shuji Nakamura），則當選2016年工程科學組名譽院士。     We’re in a digital world filled with lots of social bots 網路世界現今充滿社交機器人   Back in 2014, the social media company Cynk had an exceptional day on the market: The price of its penny-stock shares jumped in value by more than 25,000 percent, driving its value up to $5 billion. Pretty good for a company with no assets or revenue and just one employee.   The key to Cynk’s rise was a suspicious Twitter storm advertising its surging stock price. A small army of accounts all seemed to be tweeting the same information — almost as if it was part of a coordinated network.   The story of Cynk highlights just one of the ways in which bots — automated agents driven by very basic artificial intelligence — are beginning to shape our digital world. Bot networks have been found promoting celebrities as well as politicians, and the Office of Naval Research is concerned with how bots shape discussions of global affairs, including messages about Syrian refugees and ISIS propaganda.  Read More.   Prepare to pay the price for online celebrity 在網路上出名可能得付出代價   For many parents, the inexorable approach of puberty and those awkward teenage years sends a clear signal that it is time for “the talk.” The conversation in mind, however, has nothing to do with birds or bees.   The discussion centers instead on the dangers their tweens and teens face from a near ubiquitous source; one that they, having first encountered it as adults, are themselves struggling to navigate — the internet.   Aside from the more obvious sinister threats — bullying and cyberstalking among them — incautious travelers through the online world face the possibility of damaging their own real-world reputations through missteps in the digital realm.  Read More.   Fasting-like diet turns the immune system against cancer 齋戒式飲食法有助抗癌   A fasting-like diet with chemotherapy strips away the guard that protects breast cancer and skin cancer cells from the immune system, according to a new USC-led study on mice.   The study was published in the journal Cancer Cell on July 11, days after BMC Cancer published a separate study showing that a pilot trial of the three-day, fasting-like diet was “safe and feasible” for 18 cancer patients on chemotherapy.   Both studies were led by Valter Longo, professor and director of the USC Longevity Institute at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, who has found several health benefits of fasting-like diets, from weight loss to slowed aging. The clinical study was co-led by oncologist David Quinn of the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.  Read More.
