3. USC NEWS (a) In memoriam: USC President Emeritus Steven B. Sample, 75 悼念南加大前校長, USC President Emeritus Steven B. Sample辭世
| Steven Browning Sample, who served as USC’s 10th president from 1991 to 2010 —a time of remarkable transformation at the university — died March 29. He was 75. During Sample’s 19-year tenure as president, the university ascended the national academic ranks. USC became a highly selective undergraduate university, recruited many nationally prominent faculty, created a global presence, completed what was | at the time the largest fundraising campaign ever in higher education and built partnerships in the communities surrounding USC’s campuses. “Generations from now, those studying the history of our university will quickly find themselves learning the remarkable story of Steven Sample,” said USC President C. L. Max Nikias. “So many of USC’s successes, so much of our university’s current stature can be traced back to Dr. Sample’s dynamic leadership, keen foresight, and extraordinary prudence. Dr. Sample stood over our university — and led our Trojan Family — as it began its singular transformation, and for this we should all be grateful. “On a more personal note, I consider Dr. Sample to have been one of my most significant and formative role models,” Nikias said. “It was he who encouraged me to apply for the provost position at USC, and it was he who so often mentored me during my tenure as provost and as dean of our engineering school. Niki and I will miss him tremendously.” Read More. |

| The 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, one of America’s most prestigious literary honors, has been awarded to Viet Thanh Nguyen, associate professor of English and American studies and ethnicity at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. The Pulitzer Prize is a worthy acknowledgment of the profound impact of his widely read and lauded first novel.” Read More. |
(c) Campaign for USC reaches $5 billion mark 南加大歷來最大規模募款計畫已破50億美金門檻
| The Campaign for the University of Southern California has crossed the $5 billion milestone toward its $6 billion goal only 5½ years after the university began its historic fundraising effort. USC’s campaign aims to advance its missions of teaching, research, patient care and public service, and to expand the university’s impact and influence around the world. “The wholehearted support from our trustees, alumni, friends and | parents is a tremendous vote of confidence from those who share our vision,” USC President C. L. Max Nikias said. “We are so appreciative of their generous contributions, which are fueling our progress among the world’s most preeminent research universities.” Trustees lead the effort The campaign’s success has been led by members of USC’s Board of Trustees, who have collectively contributed nearly $1.4 billion of the campaign total. In all, more than 295,000 alumni, parents and friends have contributed to the university’s transformation, and about 88 percent of those have made gifts under $1,000. Of the funds raised, more than 60 percent has come from non-alumni. Campaign gifts are having an impact across the university, building the endowment for faculty, research and student scholarships as well as advancing the university’s ongoing academic priorities. Funds are also supporting the construction and renovation of facilities, including such transformative projects as USC Village, scheduled to open in fall 2017. Read More. |
(d) Visionary gift names the USC Roski Eye Institute 南加大眼科中心獲2500萬美金命名捐款
| Longtime USC benefactors Gayle and Edward Roski have made a landmark $25 million gift to endow and name the USC Gayle and Edward Roski Eye Institute at Keck Medicine of USC, reflecting the institute’s position as one of the nation’s leading centers for advanced vision care, research and education. The Roskis’ gift will support USC’s initiatives to preserve, restore and improve the sight of patients in Southern California and worldwide. By propelling discovery of new knowledge and | furthering the education of tomorrow’s leaders in ophthalmology, the gift will enable the USC Roski Eye Institute to continue its powerful influence on vision care, research and education across the world. It also will advance Keck Medicine of USC’s position as a leader and innovator in the global human health revolution. USC Trustee Ed Roski and his wife, Gayle, are major benefactors to USC’s art and design school, students and programs. This latest generous gift takes on special meaning because of the couple’s own experiences: Gayle Garner Roski, a plein-air watercolorist, received cataract treatment at the USC Roski Eye Institute. The procedure dramatically improved her ability to see color and light values. After the surgery, she realized how her vision, blurred and darkened by cataracts, had affected her paintings and changed how she used color. The Roskis now hope to help others suffering from vision loss or impairment. Read More. |
(e) Study links coffee consumption to decreased risk of colorectal cancer 喝咖啡或許能降低罹患大腸癌機率
| Whether you like your coffee black, decaf, half-caff or even instant, feel free to drink up because coffee consumption may decrease the risk of colorectal cancer, according to a new study. Researchers from the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and others examined more than 5,100 men and women who had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer within the past six months. They also inspected an additional 4,000 men and women with no history | of colorectal cancer to serve as a control group. “We found that drinking coffee is associated with lower risk of colorectal cancer, and the more coffee consumed, the lower the risk,” said Stephen Gruber, director of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and senior author of the study. The research was published in the April issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Participants reported their daily consumption of boiled (espresso), instant, decaffeinated and filtered coffee, as well as their total intake of other liquids. A questionnaire also gathered information about many other factors that influence the risk of colorectal cancer, including family history of cancer, diet, physical activity and smoking. Read More. |
