(Photo/courtesy of the Tsai family) A $1.5 million donation from a couple with strong ties to USC will enable researchers at the USC School of Social Work to explore how technology can promote health among older adults in Taiwan. Provided by USC Trustee Daniel M. Tsai and his wife, Irene Chen | MA ’83, through their charitable foundation, the funding will support the efforts of Associate Professor Shinyi Wu and her research team to test whether tablet computers can be an effective medium to help prevent disease, decrease isolation, increase social engagement and improve general well-being among older adults with disabilities. “This gift is incredibly valuable and will enable innovative research that has the potential to address serious disparities in how vulnerable older adults receive care,” said Marilyn L. Flynn, dean of the USC School of Social Work. “We are fortunate to have such forward-thinking and caring donors who recognize the importance of this work.” Researchers hope the project will demonstrate that older adults can embrace new ways to care for themselves in an increasingly technological era of health care. | The $20 million gift establishes an occupational therapy initiative in China and Florence Clark is installed as first holder of Mrs. T.H. Chan Professorship. USC Trustee Ronnie C. Chan MBA ’76 and his wife, Barbara, have dedicated $20 million to USC’s pioneering occupational science and occupational therapy program. Given in honor of Chan’s mother, the gift endows and names the | division, which will be known as the USC Mrs. T.H. Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy. This is the first naming gift and the largest ever made to any occupational therapy program in the history of the field, according to the American Occupational Therapy Association. The gift also extends the international reach of the division through the USC Mrs. T.H. Chan Occupational Therapy China Initiative, which will establish a partnership with a top Chinese university to develop a graduate program in occupational therapy in China. | Hundreds gathered to officially break ground on USC Village, a 1.25-million-square-foot residential and retail center that will reshape the university and its residential life. The biggest development in the | history of USC at $650 million, the project also will be one of the largest in the history of South Los Angeles, providing thousands of jobs and pumping billions of dollars into the local economy. “In the past four years, we have been privileged to break ground on a number of new projects at USC. | Ranking among the top one percent most cited for their subject field and year of publication, four USC Dornsife researchers earn the mark of exceptional impact. Four researchers at USC Dornsife have been named by Thomson Reuters as having “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” for 2014. Based in New York City, the multinational media and information firm assessed papers indexed between 2002 and 2012 in 21 fields of study. They tracked authors who published numerous articles ranking among the top one percent of the most cited in their fields in the year of publication. The documents represent research that the scientific community has judged to be the most significant and useful. Among the four given the distinction was USC Dornsife Dean Steve Kay, who emphasized the collective effort to produce science with relevance through translational research. “I am fortunate to share this honor with so many wonderful colleagues at USC,” Kay said. “Our recognition affirms our collective mission to make USC the best institution in the world for cutting-edge science and medicine.” Upwards of 3,200 researchers from throughout the world are recognized in the study.
