Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle Corp., grew up thinking he would move to Los Angeles, attend USC, get married and become a doctor.

Many people he grew up with on the south side of Chicago expected him to do just that, he told the thousands attending

USC’s 133rd commencement today on the University Park Campus. “Over time, their dreams became my dreams. They convinced me that I should be a doctor.”

Ellison attended college and took courses in pre-medicine. But he dropped out at age 21.

“Whatever the underlying reasons, I was unable to make myself into the person that I thought I should be,” Ellison said. “So I decided to stop trying.”

“Virtually everyone important in my life — my family, my teachers, my girlfriend — wanted me to be a doctor,” said Ellison, who this week announced a $200 million gift for USC to establish a cancer research center, the Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine of USC.  Read More.

(b) $200 million gift launches Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine of USC

南加大獲甲骨文創辦人捐贈2億美金成立癌症研究與教學中心

Oracle founder Larry Ellison

Technology entrepreneur Larry Ellison has donated $200 million to establish the Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine of USC, a new center in Los Angeles that will combine interdisciplinary research with the holistic prevention and treatment of cancer. David B. Agus, professor at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, will lead the institute.

Ellisons gift is among the largest made to cancer research and

treatment in recent years.  The donation was announced at the Rebels with a Cause fundraising gala for the USC Center for Applied Molecular Medicine on May 11.

The new institute will invite mathematicians, physicists and other scientists to collaborate with cancer researchers from the traditional disciplines of medicine and biology. We believe the interdisciplinary approach will yield up new insights currently hidden in existing patient data.  Read More.

(c) Financial aid for low-income students tops USC agenda in Washington

WASHINGTON — USC President C. L. Max Nikias and Provost Michael Quick led a delegation of trustees and senior administrators to Washington, D.C., where they addressed several higher education priorities with a bipartisan group of legislators on Capitol Hill.

Topping the agenda was financial aid for low-income students. USC, which maintains a “needs-blind” admission policy, enrolls more

low-income undergraduate students than any other highly selective, private university in the country.

To achieve this, USC offers a need-based financial aid package averaging $32,291 to undergraduate students, committing more than $300 million annually in overall financial aid from its own sources. The Pell Grant program, a federal grant of up to $4,860 for low-income undergraduate students, supplements this aid, but faces decreased funding support.  Read More.

(d) USC’s Teaching Garden takes urban farming to new heights

USC Hospitality is developing the USC Teaching Garden, a self-sustaining garden to harvest a variety of fruits, herbs, vegetables and edible flowers for its dining venues.

The gardens farming techniques support USCs commitment to the environment and the health of the universitys dining guests by growing food locally without the use of harmful chemicals.

With the support of L.A. Urban Farms, USC is the first university in the nation to have a farming effort of this scale using vertical garden aeroponics technology. Aeroponics, the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil, can be used to harvest flowers, vegetables, herbs and fruits. The towers sustain plant growth while using 90 percent less water and 90 percent less land than a traditional garden.  Read More.
