3. USC NEWS (a) USC takes its place in Los Angeles skyline 南加大成為洛杉磯天際線的一部分 
| University’s name, shield placed atop downtown landmark USC’s logo and name now sit atop a 32-story landmark office tower at Olive and 12th streets, facing the east and west sides of the city of Los Angeles. On Dec. 19 and 20, a Huey helicopter raised six letters, two shields and supporting framework to the top of the tower. The letters weigh about 500 pounds each and stand 15 feet tall. The shield weighs | 2,000 pounds and is 20 feet high. The university now rents more than 1.3 million square feet of office and laboratory space in the Southern California region, about 20 percent of it in the tower. It’s part of USC’s dramatic expansion during the past four years, with 2 million square feet of university-owned space added or nearing completion. The total includes 1.2 million square feet at USC Village, which will open in 2017. Sign of the times The sign’s placement will give the tower a USC presence from top to bottom. The university became the building’s largest tenant earlier this year, leasing more than a quarter of the tower across several floors for various university units. | For the second time in as many years, USC ranked second nationwide in recruiting foreign students, according to a new report. Previously, USC had been the most popular destination for non-U.S. citizen scholars for 13 years. USC enrolled about 12,300 students from abroad in the last academic year, according to a survey conducted by the New York nonprofit Institute of International Education, in partnership with | the U.S. State Department. Although that was an increase of nearly 1,300 students from the year before, USC still ranked second to New York University, which had about 13,200 foreign students, according to the report. UCLA ranked eighth in the survey, and UC Berkeley was 18th. Read more |
(c) Solomon Golomb to receive Franklin Medal for work in digital communications 南加大資深教授獲頒富蘭克林獎章 
| Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Stephen Hawking and USC’s Andrew Viterbi are previous recipients of the prestigious honor Glomon Golomb, University Professor, Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Mathematics, and holder of the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Chair in Communications, has been selected to receive the Franklin Institute’s 2016 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Electrical Engineering. The award will be presented at a ceremony | in April 2016. With this award, Golomb will join the ranks of previous Franklin Medal recipients and distinguished laureates, which include Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Stephen Hawking, Elizabeth Blackburn and Andrew Viterbi PhD ’62, the alumnus for whom the USC engineering school is named. Golomb is being honored for his work in space communications and the design of digital spread spectrum signals — transmissions that provide security, interference suppression and precise locations for applications such as cryptography, missile guidance, defense, space and cellular communications, radar, sonar and GPS. | If scientists can suppress ghrelin’s activity in the brain, they may be able to cut down on the desire to overeat. Looking to avoid overeating during those big holiday meals? You might want to avoid fasting in the days beforehand. Cycles of food restriction unleash a “hunger hormone” that increases the capacity to eat more before getting full, according to laboratory research by USC researchers. | The insights published in the journal eLife could be valuable for helping the researchers develop new weight-loss therapies. “We are looking deep into the higher-order functions of the brain to unpick not just which hormones are important for controlling our impulses, but also exactly how the signals and connections work,” said lead author Scott Kanoski, assistant professor of biological sciences at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
