Trojan Rugby Alumni!
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Here in Los Angeles we have some strong updates to inform the USC Rugby Alumni... but before sharing, we have some important scheduling notices and requests to make:
Saturday, Sept 14: Back to School Alumni Flag Rugby Tournament
- Mark your calendars as we will be hosting a flag rugby tournament for the current players to meet some of the rugby alumni. Flag rugby is an easy and fun way to enjoy the game, while making sure no one breaks bone or pulls a muscle. The tournament will be hosted in partnership with Flag X.
- The current planning is to have this hosted at USC and we will have a post game social afterwards to quench our thirst.
Sunday, Sept 22: San Diego or Orange County Alumni BBQ
- The team is planning on a rugby retreat to San Diego to play one of the universities down there and we are looking for a SD or OC based alumni to help host a BBQ. The idea here is to host our player + alumni for an early evening of good food, banter, and fundraising. Can anyone help here? Please email me!
Saturday, Oct 26 & 27: USC at the West Coast 7's in Chula Vista
- USC will be one of the teams featured in the rebooted West Coast 7's Rugby tournament. We will be looking for alumni to come out and support the team.
Saturday, Nov 16: USC Homecoming vs Nebraska
- Mark your calendars and book your tickets. We look forward to hosting our out of town alumni with a campus tailgate. Details to be sent soon!
Program Updates:
Coaching:
Coach Riaz Fredericks has committed to another year with us at USC as Head Coach and we also welcome Sean Cooper (Class of 2016) to the coaching staff as assistant coach/strength and conditioning coach for the coming year. Sean is a certified strength and conditioning coach and is currently working at the prestigious EXOS Academy training college and professional athletes. Sean had stints with Olympic Club and Belmont Shore in both 15's and 7's after graduating from USC.
Directing the Program:
We are glad to continue to have the valuable resource of Dominic Riebli continuing to serve as Director of Rugby at USC. In this role, Dominic will help begin onboarding me as Co-Director of Rugby at USC and together we will look to instill a sustainable and realistic 4-year plan for the program, elevate the reputation/status of the rugby program within the university and with varsity athletics, and work closely with the alumni board to establish a successful financial future of the program.
Alumni Board:
We are continuing to grow the Alumni board. Bryan Randles (Class of 1997) and Mike Church (Class of 1994) are leading the charge here and have been meeting with various alumni and the university. More updates on this soon. Please reach out if you'd like to be involved in the Alumni board.
Fight on!
Joey, Class of 2015
